It's an okay track. Nowhere near as bad as the band make out, but certainly nothing special. Door to the River is much better.

Completely agree.

One of their best singles and an eery masterpiece live. Also the Saint Etienne remix is the second best remix the band has in their catalogue.

Brilliant b-sides in general - I remember listening to the CD singles so many times over and over again that summer.

I like what they did with it musically, but the bizarre decision to speed James' vocal up and raise its pitch makes it all-but unlistenable to me. I think it's because it's only a fraction higher than normal, so its wrongness scrapes away at my brain.

Now, the Starecase remix on the other hand is a real favourite of mine.

Agreed. Utterly outstanding remix. It actually manages to make the song sound even more fragile, ethereal and beautiful.

Reminds me I must start a remixes discussion thread (if one doesn't exist already).

It's a simple pop song with superb production. The killer for me was seeing it live though. Somehow I didn't quite count on it being utterly towering, but it just carried such a huge sound. Superb, and still one of my favourite Manic moments. Shame it only gets cursory outings.

Nice to hear lots of people saying how great it was live at the o2. I was there too, and got weird looks when I said I enjoyed this and Empty Souls the most.

I remember me being obsessed with this song at that time.
Not very fond of the lyrics but the melody is lovely and I felt really fortunate that I got the chance to hear it live twice.

I wasn't at the 02, but James sounds a little bored singing it on the recording. But when they played it on the 2002 Forever Delayed tour it was immense.

I think I created a remix thread ages ago but definitely time for a new one!

Used to love watching the video of this on the single DVD. Pre-YouTube!

This always disappoints me too, and Lifeblood is the worst example of it. It's such a good album, and their rejection of it seems to be purely because of the reviews/sales, which is sad.

I love There by the Grace of God. It's pleasantly haunting and sort of invites you into the empty spaces in a comforting way. I remember it coming on the instore radio when I worked in Virgin Megastore, and being immensely glad that a new Manics song was interrupting whatever tripe had played before it - though I also remember wondering if they really needed to steal a Marilyn Manson lyric...

I don't want to drag the thread too much away from TBGOG to focus on this point but yes, it's persistent and disappointing - it seems as if the band very often measure the worth of a song or album only via chart position, sales, and reviewer consensus (in that order). I do of course understand this as it's obviously an objective measure of success and widespread recognition of their effort and skill.

I've been listening to a few of the newest interviews with the band and they're (rightfully) delighted with Futurology because it charted well, seems to have sold well, and that it got good reviews. Yet whenever they discuss Lifeblood, as you say, it's almost a swearword for them - a reminder of what they see as a failure - and that's just not something I understand at all.

They still discuss GATS the same way too.

I've always thought that by playing badly reviewed or low sales songs live and pulling it off and the crowd loving it would be a good fuck you to people who don't appreciate their songs but they rarely seem to want to do it. They always seem to disown previous albums pretty quickly, with some notable exceptions. Futurology will probably be no different.

Yes, there's a strong tradition of 'we are so proud of this album, it's our best ever, it's pure Manic Street Preachers' (before release) then 'it was a mistake, we should have put this b-side on it, we shouldn't have released [insert name of single] at all' (a year down the line).

You're right, too, that they'll be expressing reservations about Futurology soon enough. It'll be interesting to read their regrets and hindsight about that one.

Ah well, we all have our idiosyncrasies.
