I can imagine a change from the traditional 2 year single-album-tour-festivals cycle. One of the true rarities over the years is a Manics tour with no album attached, so that could be fun.

I've had 20 years of memories up til now, to the point that the band is basically like an old mate. The passion may not be what it was, but I'm always going to have that comfort blanket like feeling whenever I throw on their latest, or have a dig through the archives on Youtube. But honestly, they've had a sensational career and although there are debates about the live sound, the setlists and recent albums, I find it difficult to want much more from them at this point.

And so with little to prove, the answer to "what next" is whatever the hell they want really.

Masses Against The Classes 20th anniversary tour, January 2020; celebrating 20 years of their #1 hit single - playing Masses Against The Classes in full each night, plus a second set of hits from across their career*

*nothing from KYE, Lifeblood, Postcards, Rewind or Futurology though.

Are you saying to suggest they might play something off Journal for Plague Lovers?

Hah! On the one hand, this is hilarious because they always play the full song. But then again, technically they don't because they've never done the slave/justice bit at the end to my knowledge?

Either way, I love the idea of a poster with "playing Design for Life from START TO FINSH!"

Of course if they were doing that they'd swap the verses about or replace the instrumental section with part of Horses Under Starlight or something.

I popped on the National Treasures dvd last night for a bit and forgot at how bad the quality of the videos is, it's like they compressed them all or something weird. It made me want a blu ray release of all their videos remastered and all in their own proper aspect ratios, from the first video to the latest ones.

Considering the current state of the UK and the world in general, I think we desperately need a Manics album built from political analysis, vitriol and angry hooks.

Did you know that Nicky Wire has a politics degree???

I've always seen the Manics as being like the First Love Lost. Someone you don't want to date now because it's been twenty years without any contact and they are probably happy with a family, but you want to know they are doing well and every now and then a memory will be triggered of them and that time.

I don't really sit down and listen to the Manics anymore, but if a song of theirs comes on my Ipod shuffle, or if I see their name in print, it's almost Pavlovian that I am immediately interested. And after years of being disinterested in their output from about 2005 onwards, it was nice to listen to RTF and Futurology and hear something different and inventive and less 'safe'.

It would be nice to see them live again at least once more as well. Considering Manics gigs have been amongst my happiest memories, it would be nice to exorcise the bitter taste of Leeds Uni 2005 which was the last time I saw them - tired, bored and flavourless.

I actually thought that Leeds Uni gig was a good one! If it's the one I'm thinking of... I went to two - 2005 and 2007, I think. Which was PPF? Which one did James' guitar keep screwing up in Found That Soul?

Wow, I'd like to hear Found That Soul live again!

PPF at Leeds was one of the best nights of my life. The whole experience (including the sweat dripping off the ceiling!!!) the 758 trains to get there, the ridiculous thing about trying to get a God Save The Manics thing and then it being OK because someone ripped the vinyl anyway. Ahhhhh memories. And of course, meeting up with some incredible MSP friends from online and off (which, come to think of it, is probably the last time that really happened which makes me feel slightly nostalgic for those naive days of the early-ish internet.) I have had some great nights since then with the band. But thinking about that night takes me back to a moment in time in a way many other gigs can't. To be fair, that probably means I can't review the gig objectively in any way! But for all those reasons and many more, it's a very happy memory for me.
