Manics covering 'Star Me Up' from my beloved Stones, Christmas is really early this year. I have started dreaming they could play it in December, however not sure I could control myself if it happened. |

I think this will be a great cover! I can almost hear how James will sing it, with that good-humoured hint of cocky swagger he brought to the Out Of Time cover lo those many years ago

This was the perfect opportunity for them to introduce Radio 2 listeners to something a little more obscure. Oh well.

Can't wait to hear Jimbo's, I mean Nicky's bass playing on this. There are quite a few runs for Jimbo, I mean Nicky, to get in there.

I wonder whether James will sing the immortal line...ewww alert...."You make a dead man cum" or conveniently ignore it?

Not to worry. Radio 2 got confused, it's actually the Stereophonics doing it.
Seriously though, this has to be the most un-Manics song ever. Also thanks to gallafield for pointing out the Kaiser Chiefs' Clash cover. That's the real fucking criminal thing here. |

I expect James will sing the lead vocal for the verse and backing vocal for the chorus, leaving Nicky to take the lead chorus vocal. I think it could work out quite well I'm really looking forward to a new song by the band
Does anyone know how much say bands have in the song choice when they're approached for something like this? Are they provided with a list of possible songs from which to choose from? Last edited by amaitheanhorn; 12-10-2014 at 04:40. |

Of all the amazing songs from the 80s, they decide to ignore them all and go for Rolling Stones...

You could say that about loads of covers they've done... Been a Son, Bright Eyes, It's So Easy, Umbrella, Out of Time, Can't Take My Eyes Off You... all sounded pretty decent

Feel like they've chucked a double bluff at us with this. As Manics fans and knowing their history and influences etc it'd have been pretty obvious to us for them to do a cover of Echo And The Bunnymen, Simple Minds, New Order, The Clash again, Jesus And Mary Chain whatever, but I think for a compilation like this Start Me Up would've been a fairly obvious choice for a lot of other bands and not for them.
Would've been nice to hear a full version of She Sells Sanctuary, that'd have been good.
