Originally the song was to be called Composition Rites, Wire wanted to change it because he thought no one would know what the phrase means. I think the Paris etc. stuff is James' grieving that he lost the one thing that he felt was worth striving for (which, as he has later admitted, may be a wee bit over-dramatic). I'm basing this interpretation on various interviews with James over the past few months.
Yes,I've always thought that's what the song is about.Maybe it's just because we did hear the same interviews

On a semi-related note, here are some Spotify figures.

This Sullen Welsh Heart - 111,350
4 Lonely Roads - 54,360
Anthem For a Lost Cause - 50,170

Who dares wins.
Given TSWH's the first track on the record, and any speculative listener will start there, these stats aren't surprising. I'd have turned off at SMTW as well.

It deserves to be played in a massive area with flags waving all over the place. i.e.. at Eurovision.

Its got "Strictly" written all over it. James could be all brooding beauty and Nicky could add some sparkle. Sean would drive everything and the audience would be a little dumbfounded again...

Now there's an idea! If we still didn't win I'd be in a mood for the rest of the year!
