I'd really be curious to hear demoes from Lifeblood. Technically speaking, the whole album is quite electronical and it is maybe their only album where the guitar doesn't come out at the main intrument. Besides that, allmost all songs, if not all of them, sound pretty beautifully, I really wonder how they might have sounded as rough demos.

I live in a part of Birmingham called Small Heath.

I'm a Villa fan so I feel offended that I've had to live a short walk away from St Andrews for the last 33 years

I tried to arrange a MSP meet up in Birmingham earlier this year but couldn't get the numbers and instead had a jam session with some of my best FD mates in a rehearsal studio.... which was actually quite fun!

Anyway, on topic. Lifeblood is easily one of my favourite Manics albums and a special edition would be amazing but will never happen. Demos/live tracks and all sorts of other goodies from that era would be welcome. Manics demos have always left me a little disappointed compared with demos from other bands I like. If they have any unreleased songs then they need to get them out there.

The lifeblood era is a confusing one for me. I absolutely love the album but there was a lot of discontent within the band I heard. I heard the album was recorded virtually seperately and James recorded all his vocals long after the music was sorted. There was hardly any communication between the band and Tom Elmhirst was notoriously awkward. I guess this could be a normal recording process but I have always imagined the band working in tandem on album tracks and maybe doing b-sides and things seperately.

Anyone care to enlighten me? I also heard the band scrapped the original EMG mix by Stephen Hague as it sounded awful.

Well the two tracks from the Hague EMG sessions on the 10th Anniversary were a lot less harder than the finished EMG album.
Given that the band didn't split up making the album and we're coming up to ten years of Lifeblood, it's a shame they haven't opened up a lot more about the tensions within the band.
Or maybe each album they plaster of the cracks until they come to record again...

1985 is one of the best fucking things they've ever fucking done. it's soul searching, reflective, history teaching and informative all at once, whilst being just an amazing piece of music to boot. you just don't get the perfect song with that combination every day, and they just shunned it.

one day i will find out who it was that decided Nixon should be a single instead of 1985 and i will punch them right in the fucking face. i will wear any criminal charges that come as a consequence of that like a badge of fucking honour.

1985 was the saviour of the rather mediocre Birmingham date during the SATT tour.
