Considering your apparent liking for all things astronomical that is high praise indeed!

Like the verses, not arsed about the chorus. Wish they'd gone for a different formula with this one rather than just banging another anthemic chorus in there, feels to me that the verses had the makings of a much more interesting song in it. From the snippet that was put up beforehand, it did peak me curiosity, but when I first heard the full thing and got to the chorus I thought I should've known. And again, like I felt with International Blue, my biggest disappointment is I'm not surprised. I love them, but I'm not unreasonable enough to expect to be blown away every time, took me a while to warm to Lifeblood and love it, hate it or don't give a shit about it, it's different. And so far I just feel indifferent about International Blue and Distant Colours. Maybe it'll change with time, maybe they're slow burners, maybe there are a couple of surprised on the album but struggling to get excited about it so far.

Both new tracks reek of Nasmyth. Not that either are that bad, just totally by the numbers. They could roll out of bed and write this stuff before they even have breakfast. Hopefully the album is more interesting but if these tracks are anything to go by they're not out to challenge themselves this time around.

Yeah. No.

If this is all they've got in the tank, they need to stop. The only people still biting are the "fans" won by better songs in different eras, who shouldn't be financially responsible for, as Dancing Kirby put it, "enabling" this shite.

Today I read an interview with Wire excusing himself from standing for anything these days. Legacy not so much pissed up the wall as a dry stain on the pavement at this point.

Suggesting that this is somehow going to piss away their legacy is a bit of a exaggeration - they don't have to do anything, one mediocre album late into their career won't ruin much.

With that said, Wire's Quietus interview was unsurprisingly frustrating, the suggestion that Jeremy Corbyn was an 'old school communist' was embarrassing - as that's the sort of shit you hear from the cashed up Noel Gallaghers of this world. Disheartening to say the least.

I didn't say this one single did that, so yeah, I agree.

This and the other three mediocre albums late in their career taken together, however...?

Realisation that "I no longer know my left from my right" probably has a political meaning as well as a more general "I don't know what's what" one.

So still less than a quarter of their career?

Assume we're talking Shatt and Postcards here?

Probably a good time to remember we don't know what the new album is like at the moment

I wouldn't want to judge Rewind the Film on RWF the song.

Well, we have two singles here, so... and RTF and Futurology were atrocious records to all but the echo-chambered-up fandom too. You'll note they hardly made a ripple outside of, well, FD.

The point about him being a massive Leaver is spot on though.

Quarter, third, whatever, proportion. Just makes sense that someone would have to do more shit than good to piss on their legacy or whatever, nowt they record in the future can change what they've recorded in the past.

I like it. The middle section totally makes it though. I see a lot of people saying that it "sounds" like a B-side. Can anyone actually clarify what they mean by that? Do you mean it sounds a bit unfinished, there's something missing, a bit crap etc?

For me the lyrics are a bit trite but I mainly focus on the music in a song anyway. I don't like the start of the song though. Does anyone else think it sounds a bit clunky with the drums coming in with the vocal? Surely it would have been better to start off with just the vocal then add the music on the word "want"?

Yes, all three.

It is fair to ask what people mean by it sounding like a b-side, though. It is a very imprecise description; many of the band's b-sides are wondrously good - better than many of their singles.

So to be clearer I will say that Distant Colours is like a forgettable b-side - I can't even recall what its chorus sounds like without playing it again. It doesn't enthrall me musically or lyrically; I haven't found it becoming familiar even by playing it back to back. It is yawning by-rote tedium.

It is a chore of a track which, in fairness to your original point, most of their b-sides rarely are.

The one upshot is the bit between 3.00 and 3.30 with the riff.
