Manic Penpals Nostalgia...

When I was about 15/16 I used to have quite a few penpals through the back pages of the NME and fanzines, etc. We used to scribble about the Manics and write quotes all over the envelopes, put little descriptions of what we were doing and what we were listening to at the top right corner, go overboard on the stickers and glitter..... it was just fabulous (sigh).

I've lost contact with all of them (this was over 10 years ago) but I was just wondering if anyone else used to do this, and if it still happens?

Or is FD the new equivalent? It does the same things with just as much glitter!

I remember that too. Also remember having email penpals too - they'd be loads of crappy manics fan sites (including my own) on geocities or netscape so you'd sign their guestbook and end up getting emailed by numerous other Manics fans from around the world who had read your comment and were wanting to be friends

Also writing (or faxing) in letters to planet sound on teletext, which would take about a week to show up. Was like a really slow version of an internet forum.

Yes! I miss those days. I co-wrote a fanzine that wasn't Manics based but nothing could beat the excitement of getting packages in the post and mix tapes from people!

My nearest to that was having a penpal who said she liked the Manics but wasn't a nutty obsessive or anything! She didn't have any of their albums.

I used to write to someone who I met through the old SB forum. She's now one of my best friends in the world and was a bridesmaid at my wedding (in fact, all the bridesmaids and the best man were Manic's fans to some degree. Plus the bride and groom of course ACE ).

I used to right to a lass, years ago, about the manics, exchanging gig photos and the like. It was great fun!! But we met up at Reading 2001 and I managed to mortally offend most of her friends so thing petered out after that... oh well! Good while it lasted though!! I still have the photos she sent, they were pretty decent actually...

All my penpals were girls so my sex possibilities are limited, unless I had a major lifestyle change... and now I'm married so my sex possibilities are nil on FD too!

I used to do that (under the name Mrs Manics, being oh so original...) and once when I put my e-mail address at the bottom of one of my messages, I had literally over a hundred e-mails from Manics fans wanting to stay in touch! I felt like a celebrity.

There was a girl I wrote letters to and a guy who used to send me drawings and mix tapes etc. I still hear from some of the people who originally e-mailed me, too, but I think FD and the like has taken over from all of that now!

I'd actually love to have a Manics penpal but I am forbidden to give out my address.

I used to have loads from answering my ad in the now defunct 'Select' magazine. I am still friends with one or two of them, but the rest turned out to be a bit dodgy!
I do miss proper letters though..*hint, hint*

I still have the E - Friends section of my web site, if anyone's interested in adding themselves or finding a fellow Manics and/or Richey fan to correspond with: http://www.richeyedwards.net/efriends.html

I have a collage I made from select personal ads just from Manics' fans. I used to write to a couple of people from here and bling up the envolopes with glitter and stuff, well I still do with Xmas and birthday cards.
