I already liked them, but when they said they were going to make one album and then split up I knew they were for me. Ironic, then, that I've just come back from watching them play tonight in support of their 10th album and I still love 'em

i was vaguely aware of them from the early days due to a dear friend thinking they were the best thing ever.

for a bit, due to being an avid NME reader, i was more aware of them as a band who had a member going missing more than i was their music.

when the Help! charity album came out their cover of Raindrops was easily the best thing on it, and that's the one that got played often.

i bought EMG & all the singles and was rather impressed with them. however, it was when i first heard Tolerate, with that amazing instrumentation and brilliant lyrics, that i finally accepted they were one of the best bands ever.

When I came out of my first full-length gig and realised I wanted to see them the next night, and the night after, and the night after. Never happened with a band before them.

I trust the Manics are still for you Hanna or have you upped sticks to the Waving Flags camp?

I had a moment in my last year of high school when I realised they were really cool, and more interesting than what everyone else was listening to. In its own snobby way, that was the clincher, the knowledge that listening to them meant I was listening to better music, that said more and meant more, and I really liked the feeling it gave me. Such a poseur.

I suppose I was aware on them in the early 90's, but never really listened to them. I did become a bit morbidly interested in Richey's disappearance, mainly through the weekly updates in Kerrang! So when EMG & ADFL was being promoted, I read a lot of articles and interviews. I fell in love with Design, bought the single in April 06, the album I think in May 06 and my first gig was 1st June 06 and I was hooked.

I’m still fascinated with Richey's disappearance, but not in the same grim teenage way I was back then.

Should also say that my first internet forum was a Manics one, back in 1996, and I did meet my ex boyfriend on there! I thinks it's fair too say that they have been a major influence on the last 14 years of my life and probably always will. Everytime they release anything new, I'm never sure about it - but then it grows on me and I start loving it.

Reading 94. Had just left the mosh pit after Pulp and Radiohead (I think???). Got a burger with my mate and started watching the Manics from afar. The energy and raw power made me quickly want to get back down the front and caught the last chaotic songs of the set. Awesome performance immediately drew me in. Wasn't particularly arsed about them up until that point. All my music taste was Blur, Radiohead, Senseless Things, The Cure and Carter USM. I missed out on The Clash entirely until I got into the Manics.

A Design for Life - Oasis had gotten me into rock / guitar music and one day I heard A Design For Life On The Radio. Got Everythign Must Go and fell in love with a band for the first time. Which is just as well because Oasis released Be Here Now shorlty after, so was nice to have a new band when they "turned shit" - my feelings at the time.

A good friend of mine had got into them and couldn't praise them enough. We share our good taste in music so I thought I'd give them a try and gradually fell in love with them. Full blown fan now.

I randomly stumbled across the 4st 7lb lyrics and was just stunned...I'm recovering from anorexia (haha embarrassing personal information! ) and I couldn't believe how perfectly Richey hit the nail on the head. I went straight out and bought THB and never looked back!

It was in autumn 1998 when the Tolerate video was played over and over again at the Swedish music TV channel ZTV. Every time it came on I turned the volume up to maximum (yes! no kidding - but my small bedroom TV was probably not very loud..! ). And then I got the album, which I listened to obsessively. This was also a time when I was really discovering music in a new way, and I still remember buying two of my "World's Best Records Ever" (THB and Saturday Night Engine) at the same time, not knowing what they would mean to me after just a few listens.
