I haven't heard that guitar sound much since it was used in the seventies, it seems to have disappeared from guitarist's vocabulary for some reason...

Aaah, that's it, Beautiful South. Was trying to think who it reminds me of... Quite like it so far, think the three songs so far are quite different so curious where the rest of the album's gonna go from here..

I'd like to think it's the same strings people as on Out of Time

glad I'm not the only one to immediately think Out of Time and Beautiful South (I don't know enough by them to really judge).

have only listened to it twice so far, but think this one may need to be the grower for me. the strings might be too much on the intrusive side - think i'll have to check out the acoustic version to get a proper feel for it.

I've given it a couple of listens so far, and I really like it. Contrary to some options so far, I think it does show progression for the band - it's the first duet of the sort they've tried, the guitar and the strings sound like nothing they've ever done before, and I think it's the first time the string arrangement has served as a song's core melodic driving force, rather than just as an accompaniment to whatever James is playing on his guitar.

This and Bluer Skies are my two top releases so far.

Don't start me on Matt. When you chose to not play guitar on your own songs because you want to parade along the front row like a popstar, you are part of the problem.

Hahaha. That whole article is basically a mid-life crisis. "On their latest single, Thought Contagion, the band have even used the skittish drum patterns of Trap." That's one step away from when Korn thought they'd invented fucking dubstep.

When I first heard the album version, I was sure it was Jacqui Abbott dueting too.

I'll listen to the actual song in a bit, just watched the live acoustic video now, I kind of got bored half way through but their vocals are nice.

I've got more than a soft spot for Paul Heaton so nothing wrong for me with The Beautiful South comparison. The strings definitely make it, as said above it is similar to William's Last Words in actually having an interesting string part rather than just underscoring a solo. Probably best to leave the debate in the other thread but this is hugely better than Distant Colours for me even if it still isn't quite 'top form Manics' yet.

Am I the only who thinks a lot of the new material is going to sound really flat in a half empty arena. All three are production heavy and in the past the band have failed to translate the scope of such songs live (empty souls, everything must go).

Just watched the acoustic youtube version. It's fantastic. The 3 songs released are great melodic Manics but with more depth than PFAYM or SATT.

The Anchoress has an AMAZING voice for Manics songs. Such a contrast with James. (And she does the best LBN too).

Love it.

Together the tenderness cries indeed.

EDIT: Not digging the album version so much... Why is it always strings for everything?
