That'll be the theremin chief!

But yeah, the mix is ace, proper drums and new guitars and allsorts. I also loved how they played it with the strings & guitar intro on a few tours as well.

When was the last time they used the strings intro? I have a notion it was around 2010/2011?

Motorcycle Emptiness turned into a converter belt 3.30 song with gratuitous strings. This was the beginning of the end. I don’t know who produced this but it had to be Eringa. Only he could do this.

Doing a tune for a Batman movie was the end of the beginning of the beginning of the end for Smashing Pumpkins... or something like that.

If the end of the Manics has been going on since 2003 that’s a longer ending than 2003’s The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King. Manics: “my friends, you bow to no-one”.

Also they’d have to end the band very soon, or else 2003 will be nearer the start of the band than the end of it (*feels old*). It’s more likely that 2003 will turn out to be the beginning of the middle, or possibly even the end of the beginning, Michael Finnigan.

Or would your contention be the end already happened for you?

What a lot of utter nonsense I am writing. Wibble.

As for my view on this version of Motorcycle Emptiness, I totally forget what my opinion of it used to be but for now I like some things about it, would have liked an official release, but the theremin bit is kind of bonkers and I’m not ever a fan of the truncated ‘radio edits’ over the full length versions. But it’s not as of the original version(s) would have disappeared if this one had been released.

Just listened to it again for the first time in must be over 10 years. Sounds all cut and paste to try and make it work but it doesn't. I think you just have to accept the length of the song to appreciate what it's about. The original is far too long but that is the point of it I guess.

Totally disagree about the the length, IMHO the original is exactly the right length. I think the radio edits really lose something of the soul of the song, more so than the production or even theremin do on this version. Production and instrumentation are important things as to how a song sounds of course, but when you mess with the structure, I don’t know, that feels worse to me somehow.

I feel the same about The Everlasting.

A vastly improved version over the original and the best studio rendition of this song by far.

Oh no I agree the original is exactly the right length for the song. But I just think that overall it's (too) long a song. Sometimes the "all we want from you..." bit can drag on.

First time I've heard this in about a decade! Had forgotten it existed...

It's really not that bad... I think it feels faster than the original, but I think that's just because of the fullness of sound. There's much more going on.

The theramin doesn't do much for me though... that was a weird idea.

The guitar solo is really brought out nicely towards the end...

Yeah, it's not bad all in all. Wouldn't say I prefer it to the original, but it's a nice take on it.

Fucking hell, that's worse than I remember. I recall being excited at the time - I loved all the TMTGOG tracks and Forever Delayed, so adding a theremin in was just another interesting electronic aside. But that's really not very good at all, is it?

Listening to it now. It's definitely just a remix and edit of the original version, with additional strings and theremin. No re-recording of drums, guitars, bass or vocals. I like having it as an alternative, but it would have been better as a full-length version, and no theremin! That theremin part has polluted my brain so much that I'm convinced I can hear it buried in the original mix now!

Listened again - it's a bit in yer face with some of the elements but I still think it's better than the original

Who did produce it?

Awful. I didn't like it then and i still don't, it sounds like musak. The song has been de-fanged, much like when they play faster on acoustic.
The theremin is hideous but i do love it on the stealth sonic orchestra remix of the everlasting.

I remember them using it on the National Treasures gig. Not sure about after that.
