It refers to the Elvis song "An American Trilogy" and I assume Elvis impersonators singing it in Blackpool in Lancashire.

Yeah it's a good song, although I think Everything Must Go should have been the album opener.

The Lancashire pottery bit probably refers to the cheap Elvis statues you could (and possibly still can) get in Blackpool tacky gift & souvenir shops.
I went to Blackpool a few years ago with a couple of Manics fans, and there was an Elvis Impersonator convention going on. We were thrilled

There's an "Elvis World Cup" in Cardiff later this year, whatever that may entail.
I think Porthcawl is where they hold the biggest Elvis impersonator competition in Europe. I've always fancied going. |

I always took it to be autobiographical.

It's one of their most enigmatic lyrics, I've always thought it was about fake culture.

I just took it to be a metaphor for the three of them, made out of english pottery but wanting to be american culture, and also the song about them being fake....I really can't explain it very well , but I guess that's the fun of it. I'm not denying it means the other things though.... I just find it hard to believe the first song on EMG refers to a trilogy and is not self referencing richey's disappearance.

I know they are welsh, but Lancashire isn't. UK, whatever, I don't think the valleys is famous for its pottery .
