that's close to what I would do;
- replace SYMM with Montana
- put Prologue as the opener
- move Everlasting to either last song or take it off entirely...

"The Everlasting" is a very important song in the Manics canon. I could write an essay on why but nobody would read it. So moving it to the last track would work for me. "Prologue To History" opens the album, replace "Be Natural" with "Black Holes For The Young" and I'm happy.

This is definitely still my favourite Manics album. It is a real dark horse because it pretends to be a commercial one with it's big singles but really it is a brave ambitious album. There are some real shocking songs on there, I'm Not Working and SYMM are two of the most obscure in the bands career. Overall, it beats the rest of the Manics albums hands down by songwriting and lyrical content. It is the most honest album they've ever recorded, and it is the sound of the band doing exactly what they wanted to do at the time.

I agree - I know it's not universally loved, but I like it very much and I think it was an important one for them too.

It's the moment Nicky finally stepped up to the plate lyrically. There is a maturity to that song that I think is severely lacking in SATT and PFAYM.

yeah, I was thinking along the same lines. a lot of Nicky's bits of EMG sound very much like him wanting to run away from everything (escape from our history, etc), whereas The Everlasting is a look back, for better or worse.

I think the Manics deserve an awful lot of credit for making such a tender album. After the adrenaline and determination of Everything Must Go, TIMT was like the hangover from a sort of tradi tinged victory party. It was raw emotionally and most of the album came across like nicky trying to deal with richey's disappearance (the brooding hindsight of The Everlasting, the disbelief of Black Dog and of course Nobody Loved You). The decision to go for a softer more string led round was also a bold move. In fact i'm amazed the album did so well given of how down beat and sorrow tinged it is sonically. It's also an album which has i great deal of emotional attachment to me because my uncle committed suicide around the time of it's release. Perhaps it was not a classic in the mould of The Holy Bible or Everything, but a quality album nonetheless. An album which deserved a 10th anniversary reissue.

My Ratings:

1. The Everlasting - 3.5/5
2. If You Tolerate This Your Children Will Be Next - 5/5
3. You Stole The Sun From My Heart - 4/5
4. Ready For Drowning - 4/5
5. Tsunami - 3.5/5
6. My Little Empire - 4.5/5
7. I'm Not Working - 3.5/5
8. You're Tender And You're Tired - 2.5/5
9. Born A Girl - 2.5/5
10. Be Natural - 4/5
11. Black Dog On My Shoulder - 2.5/5
12. Nobody Loved You - 4.5/5
13. SYMM - 2.5/5

A little trimming and the inclusion of 'Prologue' would have made this a much better album.

I don't feel any of the songs on Truth are filler as some people have suggested.

I think the second half is a bit truly depressing to listen to for some people (not having a pop at anyone on here, my real life friends have said this a few times), it's hopeless without a light at the end of the tunnel in many ways. It's an emotional wrenching and it's why I love it so much, down tempo, well thought out music that doesn't become a drudge even though the song lengths are all nearly 5 minutes.

Some people may say that of THB but that is an energetic rock album for the best part, and the lyrics are near incomprehensible so as a musical album that doesn't stand for me.
