What was their turning point gig? Their first show as a signed band?

Are there any clips of any of these shows on YouTube?

They don't really have one do they? There was never one gig that made a particularly huge impact, they all contributed. I guess the Bull and Gate gig if anything?

if i interpret the question a certain way, i would imagine the "turning point" was the cover and subequent success of Suicide Is Painless, something that turned them from another abstract hippie indie band with with limited success into a band even the non-music press reported on.

A perfectly valid point, and one I would concur with, though the lad was asking which gig was the turning point rather than release.

No idea really. We generally don't hear much about 1990 gigs and they released New Art Riot that year, so I'm thinking something around the Heavenly days. Maybe Norwich '91 (the 4 real night)?

if it's a turning point for success / longevity and it is about a gig, surely then their support slot for Bon Jovi would be the answer? around 93 or 94, wasn't it? i think it was at something called the Milton Keynes Bowl or something like that. that probably gave them a bigger audience than they had played to before?

Reading 1992 perhaps, if that counts. I think Nicky said it was the first time he realised they had so many fans or something. They were expecting hardly anyone to turn up, and a few people first took to them then, who had previously just dismissed them as NME hype.

All I know is what the turning point for me was. When I first heard Motorcycle Emptiness played on Radio 1 by this guy:

You Love Us on TOTP got my attention but ME got my money.

Depends what you mean by turning point i guess. that seems more like an ongoing milestone than a turning point.

Im guessing maybe their first London gig as well? Or maybe, as stupid as this might sound, when JDB got his first Gibson White Les Paul Custom. This is a very good question... when was the moment when the band realised, 'hey, we can make a living out of this!' Id say this would definately be pre TOTP

The Astoria gigs in 1994, selling out three nights at a fair-sized London venue (equivalent i would think of two nights at Brixton). That was when they became a big band, it no doubt pathed the way for the success of ADFL and EMG.

Without doubt it was the Marquee gig, London, 21st May 1991. They even played an encore!
Met quite a few people down the years who went to this gig & said they looked like they could take the world..

(if, by turning point you mean the band going from Heavenly Records into Sony material/ worthy of the hype to any outsiders looking in/starting to be taken seriously by kerrang and the rock press etc.etc.)
