For what it's worth, I'd consider myself a 'hardcore' R.E.M. fan (whatever that might mean). I adore Losing My Religion and never tire of hearing it. Yes, it's been played to death, but it is such a strong song, both musically and lyrically, that its impact, for me, never weakens. Man On The Moon is probably the song that gets played so much that I now find it a bit of a bore.

Anyway, I'd say that Losing My Religion is R.E.M.'s A Design For Life.

Yeah, I'd agree with that, and Everybody Hurts is their Tolerate?

I quite like Man on the Moon. They seem to close some of their sets with it or at least use it as a climax in gigs. If you're a hardcore REM fan in the vein of the manics fans here then yeah maybe Man on the Moon is overplayed but I hardly hear it on telly or radio. It's not a jukebox hit like Losing My Religion.

I'd concur that Religion might be their Design.

I'm still confused by this game. Are we comparing songs or pitting them against one-another?

If it's the former then those two songs are worlds apart.
If it's the latter Orange Crush is the winner hands down.

Orange Crush v Motown Junk so....

It's the latter - same idea as the Manics song versus Manics song thread.

I'd agree, and I'd also agree that "Everybody Hurts" is their "Tolerate".

I also find "Man on the Moon" a bit boring now, but never tire of the glorious trifecta of "Drive", "Try not to Breathe" and "The Sidewinder Sleeps Tonight".

Nah, Tolerate is better it's about the Spanish Civil War whereas ...Hurts is just about topping yourself during a Felliniesque video. It has some meaning. Yeah, brothers?
