I think it is "away", but it should be "awake". Sounds wrong, and ruins the song for me, always has.

Why would you tell the past to stay awake though? I think it means that the past is slumbering away nearby but it's then being woken up to be told to leave altogether. I might have the wrong end of the stick though!

The question should be is it 'wake up the past' or 'weigh up' the past? Bcause if he's 'weighing up' the past then the 'tell it to stay away' line might make sense...

With OS you can hear the 'awake'. Don't think I can in Firefight if that's what it's supposed to be!

Pretty clearly wake up the past, and definitely away on the second time, first time is a bit ambiguous but probably also away.

I interpreted it as awake, as it was telling the past to wake, i.e. He wants to go back to the past, than live with the bad times that are here to stay

Fools - this is James we're talking about here. Yes, it could be 'away', or it could be awake. But on past form, it could also be pretty much any word in the English language.
