3 Manics Singles in the Top 100 lowest selling Top 10 hits of the 00's

Just a bit of a 'pointless' fact that I saw on another site:

Top 100 lowest selling Top 10 hit's of the 00's

75. The Love Of Richard Nixon Manic Street Preachers 28,600
35. Empty Souls Manic Street Preachers 22,900
02. Autumn Song Manic Street Preachers 14,800

Autumn Song only sold 500 more copies than the Number 1 lowest selling Top 10 track from the 00's which is a song by the Backstreet Boys.

Very interesting! And also a bit sobering, I have to say. Not that I expected many people bought Armpitsong, but so few? It's time they refuse playing the song on these grounds!

I bought the 7" vinyl and the CD of Autumn Shite.... I think I may have actually bought two lots, one for someone else.

Maybe it's better than not being in the top 100!?

It's just a sign of generally low singles sales innit? I mean, I wouldn't rate those three tracks as particularly great Manics singles at all (they'd all be in the bottom half of the table, as it were) but all they could do is sell to people still buying singles...

Yes, that's what I meant! The state of the charts in general is always a sad thing to be reminded of.
(And of course I have Armpitsong on 7". It has The Vorticists on it, after all!)

Well it was, it got to number 2! Again, it's more indicative of low singles sales generally when these were released, not just the Manics or their songs. If singles sales had been much stronger overall it wouldn't have necessarily changed the chart positions. I mean it probably would have a little bit, but there's no way to know how much or in which direction. people just used to buy more singles. I think the early 00s in particular were misleadingly low as downloads took over and weren't included in the chart numbers as soon as they should have been (April 2005!).

In my view it's worse for whatever got to number 1 that week as it didn't need to sell much to get there. Plus the rest of the chart sold less. What do you need to get to number 40? Sell a couple thousand?

Worse than what? Selling lots more? Well duh, yeah, of course. High position + high sales is better than high position + low sales.

But again again, they could only sell to who was buying, and singles sales were not great in general. So it's much better to have a high chart position than a low one… isn't it?

The fact is, if not for the Eric Prydz and Elvis Presley records that beat them (however low the sales were) they would have had two more number 1 singles. Charts have only ever been about who sold the most that week, whether it's a couple of thousand or a couple of million.
