Your Futurology Tracklisting

Futurology is a great Manics album. There are some songs on there that stand up with the classics but IMO the songs tail off at the end either in terms of production or the guest vocalists or weaker instrumentals.

But what makes up for all of this are the demos.

Some of what appear as being the weaker tracks are much much better in their demo form. These really get to the essence of the songs and show the band's great songwriting at work.

So I decided to make my own track listing for the album.

Please post up your track listing and a little note about why you like it!

01. EUROPA GEHT DURCH MICH
02. WALK ME TO THE BRIDGE
03. LET'S GO TO WAR
04. THE NEXT JET TO LEAVE MOSCOW
05. BLACK SQUARE
06. DREAMING A CITY (HUGHESKOVA)
07. BETWEEN THE CLOCK & THE BED
08. MISGUIDED MISSILE
09. MAYAKOVSKY
10. THE VIEW FROM STOW HILL
11. FUTUROLOGY
12. THE LAST TIME I SAW PARIS

Notes: The View From Stow Hill originally felt to me like it belonged in the middle, but on an album that's supposed to be about travel it makes sense for the 'home' track to be at the end. That's a point to them. Immediately deducted by having the anticlimactic Mayokovsky following it.

However, it's not the only candidate for closer. The last three tracks are interchangeable but that's what I've settled on. Futurology and Paris are like encores here.

Give or take two omissions, 2-8 isn't all that different. SPLAM belongs on an EP with Underdogs and Winterlovers. Divine Youth is megashite (through no fault of the guest vocalist). Empty Motorcades almost got on there but would be another track fighting for a closing place. Blistered Mirrors is a b-side.

I like Black Square after Next Jet because Nina Hoss's intro sounds like she's making an announcement in an airport. Likewise, having Nina fade out at the end of Mayakovsky is a good way to segue into the 'home' track.

On the one hand, it's unfortunate that they finally did something right and then cocked up the two most important positions on any album. On the other hand, playing shuffle is fun.

I find this works well for me.

EGDM - Outstanding opening track with the Whirr sound.
LGTW - Carries on the upbeat direction
F - again the sci fi warp sound lends itself beautifully here
WMTTB - back to the upbeat and seques lovely into the next track
TNJTLM - now we end the first phase of the album with the standout.

DACH - part 2, awesome song, completely seperates the first and second half
BS - a quiter moment which allows a moment of reflection as we go into MM.
MM - A fantastic song which opens up the last section of the album.

TVFSH - Tranquil, contemplative, serene
BTCATB - summery, catchy, makes you think
DY - makes you mourn youth as you remember it and as you see it going on
EM - Anthemic celebration of who we are/what we were/what we were/where we are
LTISP - A dark end

i'd open the album with Hugheskova, halve it's length and somehow segue it into Europa, Go To War or Walk Me To The Bridge. maybe it's just me being a sucker for instrumentals as openers, but it's such a scene-setting track that should serve as an introduction.

I'll get back to you on this one, folks. Still just enjoying the album plus we may yet see the Japanese bonus tracks pop up somewhere and I wouldn't want to make a playlist without hearing those first.

Well after listening to the album and demos now for 5 days or so I have re-uploaded my definitive track listing. This bumps the released album from a 6/10 to 8/10 album for me - a perfect balance of the "hits" and what in my opinion are the better rawer demo versions. Really enjoying this album now.

An album without the beautiful clangs of Black Square is no album at all.
