10 Years ago today...
Know Your Enemy is 10 years old today!
No chance of getting a deluxe version of course, but what a fine album it was. This time ten years ago some of us were probably outside HMV/Virgin Megastores waiting for the doors to open, well i wasn't but i did book the day off to get out and buy it as early as possible. I'm glad i did, still one of their finest albums and incredibly brave. At the time they were a stadium filling band, and KYE was a complete opposite to the sort of album people expected them to make. They didn't give a fuck at the time, they did exactly what they wanted to do whether anybody liked it or not. I remember hearing So Why So Sad for the first time and being very confused with it, but still what a brilliant song. No other band were as exciting as the Manics back then. Two singles on one day and completely different to each other, 16 track album including a disco song, short UK tour, festival slots, Archives of Pain live for the first time, my first Manics gig...what an era it was. |

KYE seems to get a little overlooked, but it really is a good album. Happy birthday KYE! It's been a whole decade

Happy birthday Know Your Enemy!
I can't remember where I was when I got it. But it was in the first week of release. I remember it was reviewed on Newsnight Review, but I went out for a smoke and missed what they said. Billy Bragg was on the panel so they probably started with it and went "It's rubbish!" and chortled on with the rest of the show. I'll give it a spin later. It probably took a while to get into. Now I love all of it. There isn't anything I'd remove. I remember all the reviews saying it'd make a great single album, but interesting they never said what they'd take out? The last double album (so far) we've had from the band. And never mind James calling it "So Why So Shit", when the next greatest hits comes out, he'll be loving it again! (although the TOTP performance of it wasn't their best) |

I remember hearing So Why So Sad on the radio for the first time and laughing in sheer delight at the audacity of it. We bought the album pretty much on the day of release, but it went straight into Ade's car stereo for several months, and I only heard it in bits when I was a passenger.
I remember hiking over Cross Fell, standing in the face of The Helm wind, singing Dead Martyrs while Ade laughed at me. I remember, after a while, demanding that KYE be released from Ade's car stereo to mine, and playing it through again and again, falling utterly in love with Dead Martyrs and Intravenous Agnostic. It had escaped me that the 10th anniversary was coming up, but maybe I knew at some level, because a couple of weeks ago I hunted it out and put it into the CD player in the kitchen for a week. It is all over the place, and it doesn't feel like an organic collection of songs that mesh well together, but it has its own charm. Most fans seem to agree that its one or two songs too long, but it's rare that you'll find fans who agree which songs should have been cut.

I got into the Manics on the strength of seeing the video for So Why So Sad (it was the song that did it before people mention the video itself)....how fucked up is that?
