I suppose you could think of the three DVDs as live albums really, they've just on DVD.

But they're all capturing events, one offs that I think people would be interested in because they didn't get the chance to attend, like MEN, Manic Millennium and Cuba, all iconic gigs in the band's history that won't be repeated, or if they were wouldn't be in the same context.

I don't know that beyond the dedicated fan base there would much of an audience up for buying a recording, which would be a double CD of say, the Friday at Brixton from this tour, even if it was a great gig to be at. I'm not convinced that even if they decided they wanted to do one, what they'd do to sell it to people. I'd quite like a collected career spanning remix collection which is of even more hopelessly niche interest!

A Holy Bible gig recorded would probably be the only immediate future option that springs to mind, but there's nothing saying they're actually going to happen.

As said above JFPL would have been good, because those songs aren't likely to be played often if at all again. O2 might have been, although we're getting individual tracks released anyway.

I have mixed feelings about live albums, there are a few, Weld by Neil Young and Crazy Horse, Johnny Cash at Folsom Prison and Wilco's Kicking Television that I'm very fond of, but apart from that I always feel disappointed, or at the very least I listen once, and then redirect to the studio versions and never really bother with the live record again.

It would be a great idea BUT I can imagine all the posts about it on here already......

"Waynes vocals are terrible."
"The keyboards are too loud"

Meh, just download some bootlegs. I'd rather they focus on new material.

Immediate release CD's at each gig would be the way forward
Always better knowing you were at the gig when you hear it back!
Or Immediate release DVD's would be even better!!

Aren't live albums a bit boring? I'd just get a bootleg if I wanted lived stuff - which is hardly ever.

A DVD would be cool, but I'd probably watch it once and then it would gather dust.

Like the 'official bootlegs' that some bands do! They record the show on the night and release it the next day for people to buy (as a download).

Totally diagree. I was a bit late to the party, not getting into the Manics until EMG, but at that point they were tipped as being one of the 'must-see' live bands. I wouldn't say that they are more one than the other, but to say that they're not a live band is ridiculous. Yes, Nicky isn't as accomplished as James, but what of Sean?

Sorry, to stray off topic.

Apart from JDB they are not naturally great musicians and so I'm guessing they would feel a little out of their depth being judged purely on a live performance. Of the DVDs they have released I have never thought any of them being all that great (the possible exception being Everything Live in which there seems to be some sort of purity and innocence in both their sound and the visual of this gig (but maybe I'm romanticising it)). Anyway IMO there always seems to be something missing when they play songs live rather than the live performances overshadowing the studio versions of songs.

I've read some bollocks in my time here but that statement takes the crown. The manics, for me, have always been a thoroughly great live band. Even in the early 1990's when they barely had any songs they still put out a thoroughly good show. The only time I could honestly say the band have undelivered on a live scale was a few gigs when promoting KYE back in 2001. James sounded sluggish and there was an unease within the band.

The Live @ the O2 tracks are building up into a great live album.

It's alright when you're there but as far as an album goes it would begin to grate when JDB does that call and response thing with the crowd at least once per song and you can never hear them on the recordings.

Some of the live things they have officially were best left unreleased too. I'm thinking in particular of that La Tristesse Durera monstrosity from around the Lifeblood era.

Or James skipping parts of a chorus or even entire lines from songs. It's fucking irritating hearing an audience fill the gaps. I am not paying £40 to hear the fans sing the fucking songs.

Bloody hell! It's part of the experience. Loads of bands do it.
It's supposed to make us feel part of the show and also confirm to the band they have fans that care enough to sing back to them!
