Distractions - Just a solid Manics b-side. Typical fare. Very KYE-ish.
Ostopolitik - Nice instrumental. Nothing special. Reminds of the music to a rally driving game I used to have on the Mega Drive. I'm Leaving You For Solitude - Incredible. But you already knew that. Lost Voices - There's something really strange and alluring about it. The way James phrases the verses is really interesting and the pre-chorus guitar is beautiful. I think what's so refreshing about it is that it sounds so different from everything on the album. Once again, very KYE-ish. Reminds me of a more chilled out, elegiac version of Masking Tape. I Know The Numbers - Beautiful song. Beautiful lyrics. Should have been on the album to give it a really nice extra dimension.

just got both EPs off iTunes - 'i know the numbers' is my favourite, 'lost voices' was alright, can't remember the other two, but remember them being much better than '...solitude'.

Just had a listen to them now. Mostly they're alright, but I probably won't be listening to them over and over again.
I'd already heard I'm Leaving You For Solitude and still quite like that, even if it does sound like Hey Jude to me I like Distractions, probably my favourite of all the new b-sides. Ostopolitik is a nice instrumental, but it needs James' vocals. Lost Voices I quite like, although James sounds a bit like he's singing down a toilet in places. I Know The Numbers is quite nice from an acousticy James angle, but the tune didn't really do much for me on first listen tbh. |

Will be hearing them in the week, but Distractions is a Manics original isn't it? Not a McCartney cover? (which I still like) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HcSR3u_uQLQ

Little more time spent with the songs and the more I listen to these, the more I like. There's no masterpieces or anything, but they're a very good bunch of b-sides. Solitude continues to be the best of the bunch, it's simple but just works so marvellously. Lost Voices and Distractions both have a delightfully relaxed rock groove to them, it sounds like the band's just having fun in the studio playing together and not worrying about anything; and the latter's technology rant is rather amusing in a sort of "aw, bless" way. Ostopolitik could have used some vocals to really take it to the next step but I'm enjoying it as it is - and that piano part continues to be excellent.
I'm happy with these b-sides. Not heard I Know the Numbers yet though. It's a Manics original yea.

Heard Numbers now. Rather reminiscent of the general TGW stylings stripped down of all instrumentation to me. I rather like.

Singles haven't arrived so this is from what I can find online.
I love Solitude as I've already said, one of my classic Manics songs. The piano in Ostopolitik may be one of the most amazing things I've ever heard, the whole song is stunning, good bass playing from Nicky and a great pace. Should have opened the album or summat. Distractions is good but a little dull, could have replaced any of the songs from the album without much difference. Reminds me of Mamma Mia a little.

Had them playing today quite a lot, only played the b-side on the vinyl once, it was over before it even started! Probably listen to it once more tomorrow before putting it away. I like the b-sides though. The single itself sounds so fresh and full of energy.
