Ultimate Manics album: Track vs. track
Ok I really am bored but here it goes.
Was thinking the other day of making a Manics playlist for a mate and found myself falling into the issue of making MY Manics album (i.e. my fav songs) vs. THE Manics album (i.e. including the classics even though I might be bored with them). So I thought about this: I would make a 12 song album by putting each corresponding track up against each other, e.g. Slash n Burn vs. Sleepflower vs. Yes vs. Elvis, etc etc etc. So this is my album: 1. Yes 2. Design For Life 3. Your Love Alone 4. Motorcycle Emptiness 5. Archives of Pain 6. My Little Empire 7. Facing Page Top Left 8. Marlon J.D. 9. Faster 10. Solitude Sometimes Is 11. Die In The Summertime 12. No Surface All Feeling Pretty standard Nicky set-list really. Maybe there is a method to his madness. These are the main findings (acknowledgements given in brackets) - Track no.2 probably has the strongest Manics songs - all the Manics No.8s (bar Marlon) are cack - Journal's opening 4 song sequence is by far the strongest 4 songs in any album (and yet none make it onto my album) - The Bible's no. 9,10,11 sequence is by far the strongest 'towards the end of the album' sequence - 12 seems to be the perfect number for a Manics album. Go past song 12 and you're into murky waters. - Postcards from a Young Man, in my objective analysis, is by far their weakest album. By far. - [Ermintrude the Cow] both of their most obvious "this one's about Richey, you can all cry now" tracks are no. 12's. - Seemingly the hardest song to leave out is Peeled Apples. - No.7 has the most split vote. Disagree with the analysis of Postcards!

Yes Design For Life Me and Stephen Hawking Enola / Alone Life Becoming A Landslide Small Black Flowers That Grow In The Sky Facing Page: Top Left Marlon JD A Billion Balconies Facing The Sun Solitude Sometimes IS Die In The Summertime No Surface / All Feeling

This was hard. Really, really difficult. I ended up having to make a spreadsheet
Anyway: 1. Yes 2. From Despair to Where 3. Some Kind of Nothingness 4. Enola/Alone 5. Archives of Pain 6. Love's Sweet Exile 7. Little Baby Nothing 8. Marlon JD 9. Faster 10. All is Vanity 11. Stay Beautiful 12. Nobody Loved You Oh, and I'd disagree that no. 8's are the weakest tracks, choosing between Marlon and Removables was heart-wrenching. Agree re Postcards being the weakest album, although I've included one from that and nothing from SATT or Lifeblood, both of which I'm more likely to listen to than Postcards. Very odd, though I guess some things just work better in context? My observation - both of their most obvious "this one's about Richey, you can all cry now" tracks are no. 12's.

I was thinking maybe we could have an 'Bizzarro-Ultimate Manics album' where we pick our least favourite / worst tracks per track number too?
Several tracks might well be different every day, but for today at least... Ultimate 1. Sleepflower 2. A Design for Life 3. Intravenous Agnostic 4. Motorcycle Emptiness 5. Tsunami 6. To Repel Ghosts 7. 4st 7lb 8. You're Tender and You're Tired 9. Faster 10. All We Make Is Entertainment 11. Die in the Summertime 12. No Surface All Feeling A track of KYE and nothing off JFPL?! I know, right?! Bizzarro 1. Slash 'n' Burn 2. Underdogs 3. Born to End 4. The Descent (Pages 1 & 2) 5. You Love Us 6. Love's Sweet Exile 7. Wattsville Blues 8. Repeat (Stars and Stripes) 9. Tennessee 10. Another Invented Disease 11. My Guernica 12. So Dead Not kind to GT when I do that! And Wattsville Blues stops me putting Autumnsong in ... gah, decisions! lol.

No way I can do this. Too many songs I'd want on there!
