Wouldn't mind if they actually used them properly! THREE guitars on stage and I can't hear ANY guitar in the verse of Masses!

RIF fell out of the top 40 yesterday. Not a surprise or failure but that market has been saturated now so they better focus on the superior second half of the album on Later next week or there will be consequences.

I'm all for them having a touring guitarist, but they need to let Wayne do a bit more than mostly anonymous strumming, otherwise there's little point.

That said, they can still pull it off as a trio, THB 20 proved that in spades:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WDs3NmykvM8 (and yes I'm picking this gig because I was there)

I think they were in a certain mindset, just to be doing that material, but there was something there that has been gone for a while. I'll take a slightly shorter set if even THIS band greeted us again. Chop out James' acoustic bit, more "Rock" numbers in the set and only bring out Naysmith for selected numbers that have strings and shit. You have a much better gig.

They've always been better as a 3 piece... the THB Rough Trade gig, King Tuts a few years ago (tolerate without keyboards = awesome), the Absolute and Radio X sessions this year... you can hear a band fighting harder to fill the sound with pure attitude

True. He did that little lead bit in the chorus of Faster while James bashed out the chords as per. That was a quality little mix up that.

The Radio X performances do show that playing everything as a 3 is possible (and sounds great.) I'd still keep the keys myself, and honestly I'd also keep a 2nd guitarist, but very much in the PPF tour configuration.

Ditch Wayne Murray, Ditch Nick Naysmith, Ditch Gavin Fitzjohn. Bring back Sean Read and Guy Massey. Problem solved.

Just to echo the above comments, the best gigs the band do nowadays are the 3 piece stuff - the 2014(?) Rough Trade half Futurology half THB is the best (mini)gig of the band on Youtube IMO.

I barely saw that 3rd guitar player on stage on the tour, think he only appeared for like 2 songs? Wonder if they'll try to totally rock out when supporting GnR?

Not a falling out as such but after the O2 gig they were supposed to take two years off but they came back earlier than expected. During the break Sean Read did a few things with Dexys and wasn't available for rehearsals, so basically they said something along the lines of "You snooze, you lose" and ditched him and brought Naysmith back in and hired Gavin Fitzjohn to do the horn parts live that he had recorded for RTF. Sean Read was meant to be at Portmeirion and Newport in 2013 but think he was ill so they only really got him in to do Jools.

There was very nearly a Kevin Rowlands duet on RTF but for one reason or another it didn't happen (and I've never been able to get to the bottom of why).

Kevin Rowland is meant to be rather difficult to work with.

Possibly, maybe professionally.

I've heard good things about him though and I've been lucky enough to meet him a couple of years ago and he was very talkative and seemed genuinely interested in what my wife and I had to say. Definitely not a twat like some people have said.
