If a married man fucks a catholic?
What exactly happens if a married man fucks a catholic?

The Catholic might be the married man’s wife, so, presumably it’s fine?
It’s not my fave Richey lyric by a long shot.

think about the reasoning that follows ("does that mean you have gone to seed? or does that mean you owe him nothing?"); things are that bad in a relationship so as to fuck a catholic? a catholic might not be seen as being as sexual liberated as they abide within a constrained religion.
additionally catholics were prohibited from divorce within the doctrine; so if your partner is cheating with someone who can't divorce then that is a more complicated quandary. there is a pecking order even in christian denominations; catholics might be seen by some to being more repressed. (unless you're clergy where the organisation permitted 5% to commit more than cardinal sin.) isn't this besides the point? who is asking these questions? i like to think it's jackie collins asking these rhetorical questions. all this happening in the summer of '76, or '83-onwards looking back on '76 when jackie was at the height of her powers Last edited by taxexile; 09-01-2020 at 20:15. |

I thought the lyrics were about ridiculing issues and questions that have no actual meaning, rather than the song not making sense.

If any of us actually read any Jackie Collins books we might be somewhat the wiser

Ah yes, I'd forgotten that. I must admit that I don't listen to JFPL much. I loved it when it first came out but I tried to relisten a few years ago, and it was lyrics like this one we're discussing that made me switch it off quite quickly. I'm a bad Richey fan these days I guess!

Does that make him unfaithful....cos he fucked a Catholic
Existential headache The world is full of married men to quoteth Jackie Collins Maybe it's about society's attitudes to sex.... Or maybe he was working his way through Jackie Collins...nothing wrong with existential escapism....

I, somehow, would always connect that question with the following line:
"A situationist sisterhood of Jackie and Joan" So, from here it seems Jackie had an out-of-marriage sister, and in this case, indeed, she's the one to pose the question. And then the line that follows: "Separates us the questions without a home" Would be an invitation to all of us to question and rethink the traditional family, religion and life related ethical values, and the changing of times. This may or may not have been the intent of the band, but that's the effect it had on me.
