I knew someone who met James at a Shellac gig around 94. They said "Nice chap, but he was smelly and unshaven".

He did go through a 'smelly' phase when he moved to London that year. I remember he got voted 'Ligger of the year' in Melody Maker and they mentioned his none too clean jeans. I think after splitting from his fiancee he went off the rails for a while. That and not having his mum to do his laundry!

my wife met james and mitch ikeda in selfridges manchester the day of the lifeblood tour gig(2005)?she said he was carrying tons of stuff and only just managed to scribble an autograph (and a kiss-cheeky sausage!)they talked a bit about having to cancel glasgow gig cos of flu.she said he was dead nice and unaffected.i saw jdb in the aftershow of the xfm winter wonderland gig at manc apollo but just didnt have the guts to go and chat.he was at the bar drinking the free lager, generally chatting.he kept looking at my blue cammo kevin carter t-shirt and we made eye contact a couple of times but i would have been a mess talking to him.simon price, terri hall, martin hall, dave haslam, john power(cast)and loadsa c-listers were there.loads of man u players go in my local tescos(altrincham)but thats not really the same is it.

I was listening to everything must go, twas really trippy!! Lol, I think I made an arse of myself!! I was in Waitrose in Monmouth kind of wobbled over and was like, er, are you nicky?? and started blabbering on about how I was a massive fan bla bla bla (the leopard coat, manic millenium top and manic badges might have given that away) and he shook my hand :-D wow, and just chatted for a bit, said the recording's going well, they've 2 more songs to do and the album'll probably be out in may, he was really nice and said he had to go because Sean was waiting in the car, luckily I refrained myself enough not to then scour the car park for him, that may have appeared a litlle too scary.
Yeah, he was really nice, yay!! despite some weird obsessive accosting him whike shopping!!

*breathes* ooh, I'm so excited.
