How bizarre that Richian posted nearly the same thing in the Controversial opinions thread yesterday:

Well GT did come out in '91! I think it still sounds pretty amazing even now! And NME picked it as their fave debut album from 1991. Woohoo!

Actually GT came out in 1992, although maybe they did produce this other so-called amazing album you talk about in 1991...if so i've never heard it! :D

Okay, after FINALLY getting my copy from Townsend and after spending a few weeks with it I can say that I absolutely LOVE the new CD. I totally went in expecting to hate it and I was very surprised that I really like all the songs except one.

INWJTEOL was a weak choice for first single. I like the video and the song grew on me but it has WAY too many strings in it. Not a good single choice.

PFAYM should have been the first single. The song is epic and it is already one of my favorites from the NWire years. I love the lyric too. They should have just used the "home video" video as the actual video (If they release the cd in the US this is what they should do).

SKON - I really like the song. I don't know about it as a single but they killed any chance it has with the worst video of their career.

The Descent - Great song.

Hazelton Avenue - Another great song. This sounds like Manics doing Suede.

Auto-Intoxication - Grrrr. I hate this song. It's a total mess. It's a blemish on an otherwise great cd.

Golden Platitudes - Love this song. It doesn't have a catchy chorus but I find myself walking around all the tme going "The Platitudes blah blah blah."

I Think I Found It - Good song. 2nd worst on the cd but it makes me smile. It sounds like it should be in some cheesy musical.

A Billion Balconies Facing the Sun - I want to love this song but the arrangement drives me nuts. When the chorus kicks in it should go 2 times with the big chords before dropping down to the drum tomtom part. Drives me carzy. I want to see if I can chop it up in an editing program the way I want it.

All We Make Is Entertainment - LOVE this song. Classic.

The Future Has Been Here 4 Ever - Best Nicky vocal song. Love it. Reminds me of Jacobites (Nicky singing sorta always does).

Don't Be Evil - LOVE it. 2nd best tune on the cd behind PFAYM. Should have been the second single.

My official best to worst cd list now goes as follows...
The Holy Bible
Everything Must Go
Generation Terrorists
Journal for Plague Lovers
Postcards from a Young Man
Gold Against the Soul
Lifeblood
Send Away the Tigers
Know Your Enemy
This Is My Truth Tell Me Yours

Yay. Someone else who likes 'The Descent'.

The Gutless Wonder 13-11-2010 08:46

Dunno why The Descent isn't more loved to be honest!

This was published in Melbourne's The Age recently. Not sure if it has been posted/cbf'd looking through every page to see if it has so sorry in advance.

Me too!!:D (hence the username!). It's my joint favourite song off the album along with the title track.

Beat Poet 13-11-2010 16:54

I would like the Descent if it wasn't for the weak chorus, the bridge is great, especially considering that the Manics don't really do bridges.

Son of Stopped 13-11-2010 16:59

I've said before I love The Descent for the Madness -style strings on the chorus.
I listened to it in full just before, and found myself unable to get into Auto-Intoxication? It didn't seem to fit the sheen of the rest of the album? Which is weird because when I think about lyrics to PFAYM, it's "The nightmare isn't coming/It's already arrived" first?

Beat Poet 13-11-2010 17:07

AI sounds like the music was leftover or at least developed during the writing of JFPL. Along with the title track, for me, it's the only one that has any sort of bite.
