i liked it when i first got it and its okaaaay but that's not what i want from a manics album… I found myself playing the b-sides playlist instead. Now i can't remember most of the songs. I do still really like golden platitudes tho

Still has its moments I think, but overall it's not the first one I'd leap back to stick on. Not their worst.

Killed the band for me for several years. What more can I say than that? And yes it's still just as bad to me. SKON is OK if you're in the mood, and there's literally no other positive comment I can make about it. It's everything I don't want from the Manics, and it sounds fucking dreadful.
Thank god for RTF, and the at least ignorably mediocre Futurology. That said, had it not followed JFPL I wouldn't have looked back to give RTF a chance. |
It's Not War was the first taste of postcards for me. A song so devoid of everything I love about the manics wrapped up in a parcel of turd. An abysmal song that means absolutely nothing to me from a lyrical perspective. I then heard SKON and thought "what the fuck??". Luckily I'd heard GP and AI and gave it a purchase but then Hazelton Avenue happened and I felt the band had made a bad choice with these songs and the ideas had run out.

The title track is great. SKON is ok, but somehow less than the sum of its parts. The rest of the album is unlistenable.

I love this album, but I'm not the type of person who only enjoys "hard rock" music. The Manics have defied genre before this album, remember Lifeblood? I think because this album tried to appeal to the masses the fans don't like it, but the Manics on this album manage to be accessible, unpretentious, and true to themselves all at once. I've enjoyed nearly every phase of the band (GT I'm a little iffy on) and this is no exception.

I know its down to personal taste but I don't get how someone cant feel the joy of the opening arpegiated riff, when the vocals first kick in "To feel forgiveness, you gotta forgive, Do you see the stars or the darkness begin?" and then two more lines before a quick chorus kicks in and lifts everything around it
it may be one last shot at mass communication, it may be clichéd in places and un complicated both musically and lyrically (while still sticking away from appealing to the lowest common denominator) but its still a damn good tune |

It's not as bad as SATT, dunno how anyone can say it is, at last Postcards has some decent lyrics.

There isn't a Manics's album that I dislike. I don't listen to Postcards From A Young Man very often but I'd rather listen to this than let other artists make my ears bleed.

I like it. I dont LOVE it, but I dont HATE it either. INWJTEOL is a bit meh, but PFAYM, SKON, AI, GP and AWMIE are all pretty decent.

On initial hearings in 2010 I loved it; most of it anyway, certain tracks didn't quite stand up with the others. I saw them a few times on that tour, Dublin and London, so those days will always have special memories for me and the album thus is a part of that nostalgia.
I revisited it this week, going through the catalogue again after the excellent 'Futurology' has me back in Manic-land. My favourite Manics albums would be 'Gold Against the Soul', 'The Holy Bible', 'Journal for Plague Lovers'. But I do love the more commercial sound also; GATS as mentioned one of my favourites. 'Send Away the Tigers' though obviously not as engrossing, visceral and powerful an experience as THB, is in it's own way captivating due to simply the power of the melodies. Some very good lyrics (again, not as good as their best works), and the tunes are filled with hooks; it's just such a melodic album, very well written. Pop-rock; may may not wish to hear the Manics go for such a route, but I think they are great songwriters; no matter what genre tackle. And 'Tigers', like 'Postcards', is an enjoyable from the beautifully melodic place as THB is from the visceral. |
