And Reservoir Dogs, surely?

Ken Korda 01-06-2010 12:31

I seem to be one in the minority that preferred the working title. I suppose this title will grow on me. That's what I'm hoping anyway.

Well, it's supposed to be their last with Sony... unless they renegotiated their contract at some point.

Just don't mention Rob Roy or Planet Of The Apes.

I think James seems to have cleared up the last shot at mass communication part. In that this is their last shot at appealing to the masses on the radio etc.

mute solitude 01-06-2010 12:36

i'm glad they changed the title too - i really like this one.

Wonder if they'll do something like they did with the Underdogs 7"? Hope we get a download track or something within the next couple of weeks, at least!

But Columbia is part of Sony! So yeah, they probably moved to a 'sub-label' and it could be for many more albums! ;)

yep... my fear exactly. Or Autumnsong, which is the only Manics song I keep hearing every now and then on the radio...

Yeah right! :) I'm not holding my breath on that one, but if I'm being honest, I'd prefer them to be a little less commercial sounding...it all gets a bit too similar after a while, IMO.

I'm so not going to like this new album, I can just tell. I am glad however that many of you seem to be psyched about it.

Anyway, the new album title reminds me too much of James Joyce; not that it's a bad thing, it just doesn't sound all that original. Still, it's a million times better then the working title and I'm really digging the Tim Roth (love him!) cover. Good choice, boys!

Embla Claymore 01-06-2010 13:01

we need a thread like the JDB amp advert!! ;)

everlasting 01-06-2010 13:05

I just had an afternoon nap while listening to the holy bible and I was thinking about what the new album will be like. I see it being very fresh and different, a mix of EMG, Lifeblood and SATT, I see it having lush string sections, some horn sections and a strong rock-pop sense about it. It won't please everyone, people will complain it's not dark enough like the holy bible or whatever but you can't please everyone. I look forward very much to this and think it will surprise a lot of people. 'Commercial' or not, I never get the arguement about that, it is new material by my favourite band and I'm pleased as punch they still make an effort after all they years.

okay, but why did he say in the interview 'it might be our last' or something like that? :( or I misunderstood him :(

BrianPowell 01-06-2010 13:07

I've enjoyed and still play all of my Manic Street Preachers records.
Maybe I'm easily pleased, but I couldn't care less.
I can't wait to hear 'Postcards From A Young Man'.
Proper cool cover art aswell, if it is definitely the cover.

I couldn't agree more mate.

JPizzle 01-06-2010 13:10

I liked SATT, so I'm not too worried about it being commercial.

BrianPowell 01-06-2010 13:15

I'm a big fan of 'Send Away The Tigers'.
They revived some of the old spirit, they sounded revitalised.
I've got a funny feeling the album will be bits of Know Your Enemy, Lifeblood and Send Away The Tigers, with renewed energy from Journal for Plague Lovers.
I could be massively wrong though haha.

Embla Claymore 01-06-2010 13:20

I like pretty much all of the Manics material, I singled out SATT as it's my least fave album, but there are some pretty good tracks on it. I want to be confident that they'll release something worthy even if they plan on being 'commercial'.
Although I don't like the premises, I don't have a prejudice.

4Manics 01-06-2010 13:31

I'm hoping for a self confessed plain as day love song, the manics have grown up so much and reserve the right to contradict themselves, a proper sweet child o' mine sort of thing would be amazing :)

Scout Finch 01-06-2010 13:37

Sounds like a shitty romcom starring Amanda Seyfried and Gerard Butler.

Cassie 01-06-2010 13:45

It is going to be the last thing they will do... at least for a while.
That's the impression I get. Sorry....
But it is fine you know. They need time for themselves, besides, it sucks having to leave your family because of the touring stuff. I know I wouldn't be able to do it. I would get bored really easy that's why I admire them so much. They have been strong enough to keep on going no matter what...but maybe it is time.... =(

BrianPowell 01-06-2010 13:58

I still get the feeling they're far from finished.
I imagine they'll always want to do this.

Flint 01-06-2010 13:58

"Last shot at mass appeal" (or however it was phrased) = we'll try and connect to a lot of peeps again, get some hits out there and not just fizzle out of spotlight instantly after the release of the album. If it doesn't work, we'll shrug over it and are satisfied to continue with a series of low-key releases, possibly like Plague Lovers.

It's pretty clear what he means, if it was a "this is possibly OUR VERY LAST ALBUM EVER", it'd be bigger news and a proper statement rather than a tiny little quip in a small web news clip. They're not exactly a band who's going to stop for a while, anyway. They're all workaholics and close friends who love playing music with eachother. Nicky's pretty much the only member who isn't against doing more solo releases, what would the other two do all day if the band quit?

Stop being silly doomsaying sausages.

Finn 01-06-2010 13:59

The photograph of Tim Roth is a 1994 shot by Glen Luchford, who is a long-time collaborator with artist Jenny Saville. It's part of his book 'Monograph' but I believe it was originally a photo shoot for I-D magazine.

Tim Roth kept a 'Polaroid diary' in the early 90s, hence the camera.

mattiasbrundin 01-06-2010 14:00

am i the only one getting a conceptual 'polaroids from the dead' vibe from the title and the initial artwork?

Elizabeth M 01-06-2010 14:07

Continuing the trend of pronounceable acronyms!

BrianPowell 01-06-2010 14:23

It's all getting a bit emotional on here.
Afterall it's all guesswork.

BrianPowell 01-06-2010 14:27

I mean, for all we know, there could be another 3 albums to come after this, that's my positive thoughts anyway.
I just couldn't imagine them not making music anymore.

love made out of hate 01-06-2010 14:34

Surely the by Nicky's "last shot" comment he was referring to the fact that Manics will never do a tour of this size again?

almostfamous 01-06-2010 14:42

Anybody in the smoke got NME yet?

The cover mentions "In the studio with the Manics", hopin' for some song titles!

Dancing Kirby 01-06-2010 14:47

I do hope they've learnt their lesson from SATT about how you only actually need two or three songs designed to get airplay on daytime Radio 2 and Absolute. That's all the masses will be interested in. For the rest of the album you can, you know, write a proper album or something...

Thanks for the tip - will drop by my newsstand later but usually we in Boston don't get it until a week later than you guys. :(

Porco 01-06-2010 14:56

I really like the album title. 'It's Not War, Just The End Of Love' would still be a good title for a track though.

I'm looking forward to it hugely. Any mention of EMG is a good thing to me.

Mr.Selfdestruct 01-06-2010 15:05

I like a lot of SATT. But they did know what they were doing in terms of the sound. They played it safe, and it sold well and they received more airplay with the singles off it than probably all they're singles the singles from Know Your Enemy and Lifeblood combined. But that's hardly a suprise i guess.

I look forward to listening to it. But i can't help feeling with Journals only coming out a year ago. Another record so soon sugests to me, it's a case of let's try and make some money, as we didn't make anything with Journals. And let's face it, they can write tracks like the ones on EMG and SATT in their sleep. Hence, it coming out so soon after the last release.
In saying all that, I think I'm probably being a little MEH here. It's a new manics album, and i should be happy. I love my pop music. Good pop music anyway. I just don't want to have to deal with any souless hits like YLAINE. That really tested me as a fan of the band.
And aswell, i shouldn't moan so much about all this. Afterall, they gave us Journals last year.

But saying that, back in the great age of the 60's albums came out 10-12 months after each other in some cases! The Jam released the first few albums within months of each other so why is there so much emphasis that an album can only come out 2-3 years after the next one.

Just because it has been made faster than anticipated doesn't mean it'll be poor. For all we know they may have had these lying around since SATT. Don't forget JFPL was more of a 'concept' album. They knew what tehy wanted to do with it. I am excited for PFAYB. It is giving me a sense of hope. It will be ok :)

Bought In 01-06-2010 15:15

Is it me or has the promo work for the last few albums contained something along the lines of 'sounds like a mix of "*** and EMG". Send away the tigers was a mix of GT and EMG so now we're getting two parts EMG and one part GT.

I can't say I'm incredibly excited about SATT II yet. Why doesn't Nicky just come straight and say they're making this album just to make some money? Be honest about recycling the same albums again and again.

One line in a review of SATT has always stuck with me 'They've made this album before and they'll probably make it again'.

The songs might be good but I'm not sure if I will be listening to the album by Christmas. Here's to hoping that I'm incredibly wrong about this.

Deets 01-06-2010 15:16

my mate said there was written in the news about it on the main site that the album will be released on the 20th of September but now it's already deleted. WTF?! IT'S SO SOON.

also how do you think can we except new songs in Europe in the summer? :D
