Got hold of a copy - the first listen was absolutely terrible. It has improved somewhat on repeated listens but it's still really mediocre - better than SATT (nothing so bad as Autumnsong or Winterlovers) but that's about it. Some of the songs are OK - Golden Platitudes is nice enough and Auto-intoxication will probably be pretty popular here - it's the only track with (musically) the old fire and the bite that the Manics do best.
Some Kind of Happiness would be amazing if it were low key and not drowned in gospel choirs and strings. Ian McCulloch's part is very affecting (he certainly outshines James). The album is too long as well - by the time the last few tracks roll around I've lost interest. Don't Be Evil is such a lame finish (though not as bad as Winterlovers/TERRIBLE Lennon cover). Hazleton Ave is alright in a jaunty 90s soul/pop way. I'll give it a few more gos but I doubt I'll be listening to it much in the future. Had to whack on Journal after the first listen to stop myself from jumping out of the window! At the moment I'd rate it as a 4 out of 10. |
Harsh review but thanks for being so honest.

You Lost Richey go back to The Holy Bible era

Nothing to do with Richey. Lifeblood is one of my favourite Manics albums, along with THB, EMG and JFPL.
Actually, here's a ranking: 1 - THB 2 - JFPL 3 - EMG 4 - Lifeblood 5 - GT 6 - GATS 7 - TIMT 8 - KYE 9 - PFAYM 10 - SATT |

Have to bear in mind also that there are some massive fans of SATT on here who are more likely to enjoy this album as it's obviously made in a similar vein.
|
There are only lots of SHATT fans on here because they're relatively young people who missed the surges in 92/96-98/2001 and for whom it holds a special place in their hearts as their introduction album. :p
|
Nope, I was a 96 convert and I still love SATT. The again, I think Nixon is one of their best songs so you probably shouldnt listen to me
|
I love nixon :)
|
I also love Nixon :) definitely not their best though

Yeah I'm of the same persuasion. I think anything with Nina Persson is just lovely. Then again, I also choose TIMTTMY as my favorite manics album, and think the Magical Mystery Tour is by far the best Beatles album.
