Sadly, the casual fans turn up when the going is good. I don't personally care what people think of the album individually, and I know how much it means to the band to get a number 1, and it could easily drive their ambition to record another album or they could just give up and call it a day. I'd rather they kept going, of course.

I think you're overreacting a little. The album reached number 2, which is good for any band, ever, and was only beaten by one of the biggest pop stars in the world right now; also, this is their 12th album
not to reach number 1, have you felt the same about the rest? I can't imagine it's bothered them that much. Maybe if it reached number 51...
