What did Richey play on the records?

I've read (on here I believe) that Richey played only a small part in one of the songs on the GATS album, but according to Wikipedia:

The guitar intro to "No Surface All Feeling" was played by Edwards before his disappearance, making it the only instance of Edwards' own guitarwork being present on a Manic Street Preachers studio album in the band's history (Bradfield would typically perform all the guitar parts for their recordings).

I never knew Richey played anything for this song.

Hmm...
Considering the intro to No Surface All Feeling... is that really very likely?!
Haha

To be honest, I think there's something of his on NSAF (not the intro!), as you can hear the subtle change in the recording between verse and chorus if you listen closely. So I'm think the choruses were done first perhaps...

There is absolutely no way on earth Richey played the intro to NSAF - that's just UTTER bullshit!!! Unless it refers to the rhythm guitar, of course.

I've always been led to believe the bit they kept from the demo was the rhythm guitar for the end part - it's not quite as thick sounding as the rest, so I can imagine that being a tacked-on part. In all fairness though, even he could have played the rhythm guitar for that whole song.

Just not the lead...

Also, he supposedly played the chord in La Tristesse before the song kicks in for real.

If he did do the intro to NSAF then it's no wonder he went missing. Him playing the guitar properly would have really tipped him over the edge.
Not that it's likely he did as most of you have already said.

I think they are mixing it up with the outro to NSAF. All that feedback and stuff, richey's guitar is amongst the noise..

Richey playing guitar only makes one appearence - in La Tristesse Durera. He did not play in any other recording whatsoever. It's all rumours.

With regard to No Surface, Sean tried to teach Richey part of the guitar but he wasn't interested.

Well if you want to hear what Richey's playing sounds like, listen to FM versions of Glasto 94 and 20/12/94 (james's guitar cuts out!). It's not that bad it's simple but suits the THB era very well.

if richey had been in any other band he woulda been thrown out for lack of playing skills loooong ago. I don't think writing skills would've been enough. SHows how good friends they were that he wasn't. The picture in the NME special where James is sat opposite him showing him something on the guitar always makes me smile.

But once that happened he could have gone and been the best musician in the horrors. Five members in that band, none of them musically competent.
