R.E.M. vs Manics (or 'Shaking Through' vs 'The Year Of Purification')

I've always felt these 2 songs are way too similar. The intro especially. But which is the better song on it's own merit??

Funny, I always thought that track sounded like R.E.M., too. (Well, R.E.M. and McCarthy...) I know many loathe it, but I'l take "The Year of Purification" over "Shaking Through" any day...

Haven't heard 'Shaking Through' but I don't mind. Love REM so an REM-esque Manics song is cool with me!

The intro sound a bit smiliar but I like The Year Of Purification much more.

I thought it'd be like the song vs. song thread.

Anyone cares to kick it off?

Tough one!

Country Feedback is exceptional. Michael Stipe implied so on the Monster tour when introducing it.

But, I do love 'The Year of Purification', mainly because it sounds like REM (with swearing!)

Country Feedback is nothing like that! Although Mark Lanegan and Soulsavers stole the song for 'Revival' a few years back now, exactly the same:
