'Solidarity' or 'Door To The River'?
As we now know, 'KYE' was originally going to be two albums - a rock album and a more acoustic album. Which would you have preferred? The track-listings would presumably have been something along the lines of;
Solidarity Found That Soul Locust Valley Intravenous Agnostic Dead Martyrs My Guernica Pedestal The Convalescent Ballad Of The Bangkok Novotel Baby Elian Freedom Of Speech Won't Feed My Children Little Trolls, Fear Of Motion and Masking Tape would probably have been in contention. I've left them off as there seemed to be more effort put into the earlier b-sides, as though they were more likely to appear as album tracks, but swap as you like. 'Door To The River' So Why So Sad Ocean Spray Let Robeson Sing The Year Of Purification Wattsville Blues Miss Europa Disco Dancer His Last Painting Royal Correspendent Epicentre Just A Kid Groundhog Days Door To The River (although 'RC''s harsh bass line might have been enough to push it onto 'Solidarity'). Obviously my track listings might be way out - they're just suggestions to act as guides. But I'd be interested to know which people would have liked more, and whether KYE haters might find there's one of the two albums they like in this form. |

Where does the title Solidarity come from?

In terms of me using it, from the band. In an article at the time of 'KYE''s launch, 'Solidarity' was mentioned as a working title for the album. The Wire's now revealed it to be the working title of the 'rock' album of the two.

Phil is right, from REPEAT Fanzine interview from May 2009

it has Intravenous Agnostic, one of their best songs and any album that contains Miss Europa can't be good.[/QUOTE]
I voted Solidarity too... but then again, any album which has Ballad Of Bangkok Novotel CAN'T be good either! |

I voted Solidarity - but only just, I quite like the look/sound of both in their own right!

Agreed. But I like the idea of an acoustic album.

in an ideal world they'd have just cu the album down to:
1. Found That Soul 2. Ocean Spray 3. So Why So Sad 4. Intravenous Agnostic 5. Let Robeson Sing 6. Dead Martyrs 7. My Guernica 8. The Convalescant 9. Baby Elian 10. Freedom Of Speech Won't Feed My Children 11. Door To The River now that would have been muuuuch better. but back to your question, i'll go for solidarity.

i think SWSS (and the rest of the album for that matter) would benefit quite a lot from much cleaner and more focussed production. There's far too much going on and far too much mess all over the album. If it were tidied up a bit and made a but sharper, it would be a much more tolerable listening experience.
