Don't have to be a great muscisian to be a decent rhythm guitarist though do ya? Particularly on Manics songs, the chords are all veeeeeery similar in most songs. Love to see him try to keep up with Love's Sweet Exile mind!

I think it's on the BBC2 "Close Up" documentary where someone in the know was saying how James did all the guitar work previous to GATS and how he wanted Richey o be recorded just once for the sake of it, and that one time was the distorted two single strums (G chord) before La Tristessa gets heavy. That's comfirmed as Richey. As for Richey playing the NSAF intro, sheer ludicracy. The only Richey I know that can play that is me.

Offhand, I think its a D powerchord The rest is correct though. I haven't heard much about Richey's input on THB, although according to Sean (I think), he took naps and read/wrote while the others were recording for the most part.

Richey played some of the fuzzy rhythm guitar at the end of NSAF.

He is also on the Glatsonbury live bsides on the "Revol" CD : Richey was a competent player, but would never be by any standards anything other than average. Better then me though, by far.

Well if you want to hear what Richey's playing sounds like, listen to FM versions of Glasto 94 and 20/12/94 (james's guitar cuts out!). It's not that bad it's simple but suits the THB era very well.

if richey had been in any other band he woulda been thrown out for lack of playing skills loooong ago. I don't think writing skills would've been enough. SHows how good friends they were that he wasn't. The picture in the NME special where James is sat opposite him showing him something on the guitar always makes me smile.

Apparently.

That being said though in all seriousness he could play barre chords alright and on the last few gig bootlegs (one was up on the BBCs website wasn't it a few weeks back) you can clearly hear him plugged in and playing along particularly in You Love Us, so fair dues.
haha, thats very good, especially the bit about him buggering off to bognor. if the cor still exists, they might just take your word for that and go richeyhunting down to bognor. i can see it now, them all in guest houses run by them nanas off the shreddies crying into their weetabix if they cant find him. only joking folks.

The intro ends on a D; Mr. Europa meant the two Gs played over the intro (each played over the first two times James sings the title).

You can also hear on the live Strip It Down on Lipstick Traces.

You can hear Richey live even earlier on some black and white video of a gig in 91/92. As others have said nothing special but enough for songs like strip it down and generation terrorists.

Theres a video of la tristessa where they get the levels mixed up, james is really quiet, richeys tone is fucking abysmal, you can't tell what noise is coming out, and thats how it is on most of the gigs i've heard with richey plugged in. having said this, 5 years in a band is long enough to know a few chords you'd have thought..!
