Did Richey musically with the Manics? They're both similar because they used to tag along with their respective bands when they first started out, then despite their lack of musical talent joined the bands and became figureheads.

Bez wrote the Boys are Back In Town in 1980, handed the lyrics around his friends in the industry, got paid royalties, then did it with the Mondays.

Well at least I like to believe so

Richey wrote the lyrics to which the music was based around, much more than Bez ever did. But yes, i see your point.

Please, that's an incredibly insulting comparision to draw. Richey gave so much to the Manics despite his musical ineptitude. Bez DANCED. HE JUST DANCED. *despairs*

Richey also mimed and threw shapes on stage

I don't reckon it's insulting, only people who don't like the Mondays would think that! And only...the general population don't like the Mondays.

Ah bollocks.

Haha, yes, but that was not his lone forte!

I don't like the Mondays, it must be said, but regardless of likes/dislikes I really find it insulting. Richey was such an integral part of the band, I hate it when he gets belittled or dismissed based purely on musical skill.

Although I realise that is, uh, kind of important in a band. But still.

Bez was the figurehead for the Mondays in a way much like Richey was (maybe not lyrical however, but in interviews and media attention.)

I recognize that, sure, but I think Richey did so much more to deserve his iconic status that it just makes me tetchy when the two are compared in whatever sense. Indeed, it may well simply be a personal stance.

Haha! Nah I would say Richey was more integral to the band overall like, plus I love the Manics and only like the Mondays so ya know *shrug*

I just like some banter every now and then.

Perhaps it is personal stance but surely it is demeaning on Richey's part to be compared to a brain-dead junkie like Bez.
I don't mind the Happy Mondays though.

I could be wrong but I think the originaly comparision isn't so much of the people per se but more the role they played in those bands respectively - which obviously is somewhat flawed as Richey wrote a lot of the lyrics as well, but its the idea of both people although perhaps not musically contributing to their respective bands still being vital to them as some kind of leader/embodiment of the spirit of what makes the band etc - which I guess in the happy mondays case might be getting of your head and dancing and for the manics I suppose something a bit more nihilistic? At least thats the way I've always taken the reference, VCK may have meant something completely different...

Bingo, that's about what I was trying to say but in a much more accurate way!
