On never writing love songs: “We'll be dead before we have to do that, anyway.” (Snub TV, January 1990).

Well, one of you will be anyway...

Well, their lyrics were. Anyway, it's one thing to try and recreate the music of your favourite bands as your own (it's all a new band can really do, when they're still trying to find their own sound), but the day you start consciously revisting your own back catalogue for inspiration is the day you have to ask yourself if you're still relevant.

At first glance, I thought this thread said "The Barbecue Pit Of Nicky Wire."

Other peoples or their own it's really all they have ever done, they have never been a band based on musical innovation. I find questioning their relevancy based on that...odd? I think that's the right word.

What the fuck do I care, I'm listening to Condemned To Rocket Queen quite happily.

Nah, I would say they started out like that when they were trying to be The Clash and Guns N' Roses, but THB onwards they were far more about building upon influences rather than just mimicking them. They've never been high on musical innovation as such, but you don't have to be Mike Patton to still produce interesting music. It's just certain parts of SATT (most of which I enjoy) and the latest offering (where they seem to have brought nothing new to the table) where I question the relevancy of their music - progressing from Lifeblood would have kept them relevant; regressing back to EMG is irrelevant, as people might as well just listen to EMG.

I dunno, I suppose "relevancy" is subjective. It'd be interesting to know in what respect Nicky considers them to still be relevant - it's not the music, and their lyrics are far more "miss" than "hit" these days - so I just wonder what makes them any more "relevant" than other bands that have 10 albums.

Progressing to what though, Let's Dance Vs. Get Ready? A heady mix of David Bowie & New Order did nothing for me because I already have Scary Monsters & Power, Corruption & Lies.

I'm a contrary bastard anyway, when they announced JFPL & its concept I thought "Hmm I'm not ready for that at this point" I was wrong. & Then when they announced PFAYM strings & choirs, I gave an equal "hmm", & I like it.

His comments about Jamie Cullum had me in stitches; "He just did cover versions, he never even written a song! What is he judging?!"
