Its like that here too, if you're not really into music and just buy chart singles then chances are you get them from Youtube and not buying them from iTunes/hard copies. Songs are usually shite so the quality of the sound doesn't really matter.

There's no way I'd ever pay to download an album. If I'm paying, I want a shiny booklet to look at, or at least the opportunity to moan if the booklet is crap. If artists want us to consider the album as an art form, the packaging should also be part of the art form. So many albums just come with a shitty pamphlet. If that's the case, I've been ripped off.

Seriously though, It say's alot about the power of advertising, that people now are very content with paying for a piece of data, instead of having a lovely CD and shiny booklet on the shelf at home.

I totally agree with you lot about actually owning music! I like having an actual physical CD/musical collection. I also think you invest a lot more in the music/album when you've made the effort to actually buy it: must be so easy to dismiss new music if you just download it gratis, but when you've actually paid for it it means a lot more to you and you'll give the songs the time they deserve.

I am a bit of a musical snob in a lot of ways, though. Whenever I start dating a new girl, the first time I go to her home I find myself gravitating to the music collection to get some insight and see what I can learn about her. I think your musical tastes say a lot about you as a person. My ex had no physical music collection at all and everything she liked seemed to exist purely on her iPod: it was doomed from the start. The fact that she's a writer who sometimes covers music makes that fact all the more laughable. Pffft.

I completely agree with this. I'd feel wrong if I downlaoded. Music shouldn't be disposable. And if I went and bought a band's single that should be because I completely love that song and am in awe of it, not just something that's a nice beat to have on my iPod to go jogging to.

I also loathe the cult of watching shitty video camera recordings of movies from the cinema. All forms of artistic creation deserve to be enjoyed the way the creator(s) intended.

Why should we get a musicians work for free?! I do hope there's something that can be done to combat this in the long-term, but I won't hold my breath.

The way musicians make money from the music industry now is by gigging. Only if you're Lady Gaga and you're selling millions of albums and singles are you making serious money from them. Sad but true.

Unless some whizzo computer guy or gal develops some anti-piracy mp3 (not impossible), illegal downloading is here to stay.

The Manics had their biggest hits in the period when they could make money from selling records, so they should have something in the bank to keep them warm in their old age. Or if they've spent it all on penny chews, glittery eyeshadow and divorce settlements, expect to see Bradfield, Wire and Moore gigging until 2040, each on their own motorised scooter.

I agree with this 100%, I don't pay to download music for the same reason. Much rather have the CD. Printed lyrics are important to me too, I love sitting down with a new album and reading them through.

of course they make most of their money by gigging and merchandise, but that doesn't negate the fact that they still make *some* money from the music itself, and I would never take that and assume it's mine just because I have limewire. If people want to download, that's their choice, but I'd never do it. A few pence, when timed by a couple of thousand would probably help some way in making a better album. Some artists do make the most of the free downloads (hello MC Lars), but they are arists who have a still going cult fanbase. most of the fans who download random manics tracks are hardly likely to pool their money back into £25 gig tickets.


And that would make for the most amazing gig entrance ever.

Young bands need to get on CDs properly, some do but if a band says they have a free download I'm unlikely to check it out, if they give me a cd or sell it cheap I'm guaranteed to listen a few times.

I tend to think "nah, can't be wasting computer space on a download I might not like, I'll check it out later on youtube." Then I forget. I miss the days when support bands and such used to sell their Cds outside for a couple of quid. Discovered a lot of good music that way.
