The only thing wrong with lifeblood was releasing TLORN as the lead single and that ridiculous video that went with it

In the article below James is asked to name the three biggest mistakes the band has made:
1. playing in Cuba
2. TLORN
3. Lifeblood in general: "There's nothing good in it and nothing good came out of it."

He got right 2 out of 3 then
And which 2 would that be?

I'm guessing you speak Finnish, Inertiatic - could you maybe give us a short summary why he chose these three, if it's not too much of a hassle? I'm particularly interested in the Cuba one.

The first 2 obviously!

Cuba - "We didn't understand back then that if we get our picture taken with some local politician, then that picture immediately gives the impression there that we support the politician in question. And we got into trouble because of that, because the conclusions that were drawn from the pictures weren't true."
TLORN - "Because no-one understood the song in the way we would have wanted."
Lifeblood - no reason given (because there isn't any, right James?)

He should have been honest and said he disliked it because it only spent a week in the top 40 and sold few copies

Indeed. More Lifeblood type stuff would be welcomed round here.

I don't get why they slag off Nixon so much cos they named it in their top 10 of their own singles in the NME out of the entire 40 singles! They just change their minds all the time. I like Nixon for the record.

It's also one of the few videos they spent more than a fiver on and benefits immensely from it.

The first three albums were not best-sellers - especially The Holy Bible, even though it received a lot of praise from critics. But it was only the fourth album, we were ready to make a full album.
So even though "recieved lots of praise", you saying GT and GATS are failures like Lifeblood then, James?

Yes, thought it was a brill video. One of the few story line videos of theirs which make any sense!

The song itself is okay, but wasn't a good choice for lead single. Definitely one of my fave videos though. It's sad that those three 'mistakes' are also three reasons why so many people love the Manics in the first place

Does anyone love them because of the Cuba experiment? I remember telling people about it at the time, Manics fans and non-Manics fans alike, and everyone thought it was the stupidest, most ridiculous, inappropriate idea ever. Personally, I thought it was fantastic, as a symbol or gesture against "US world domination", or whatever you wanna call it. I was 18 then, so of course I'm more politically aware today, and definitely not as enthusiastic about it anymore. I understand and agree with the reason James mentions - but I still think the reason is strange. I mean, even before they started the trip they were given stick by press/fans/pretty much everyone else for exactly that reason. James saying they only became aware of the impression it may have on people to see them with Castro strikes me as incredibly naive, even for the Manics, who tend to romanticize certain political issues. Almost everyone - including people who aren't interested in or aware of politics at all - I talked to about this experiment at the time asked me things like: "So you support a band that worships a dictator?" And obviously there were no pictures or videos of them shaking Castro's hand yet.

I don't know, I just really can't imagine they didn't consider this might become an issue. Maybe the real reason why they think it was a bad idea is that it was almost a commercial suicide.

To me it just seemed like an idea dreamt up by a bunch of stoned students and not particularly well thought-through.

The Manics Twitter account has reported that 'Walk Me to the Bridge' was played on Coronation Street today.
