Not giving a fuck about them during THB era - I heard a 10 seconds Ifwhiteamerica... snippet during an MTV News report on the new LP and thought 'that's shit, the Manics made their worst LP ever, let's move on'. Shame on me.

My biggest regret is not seeing them on the KYE and FD tours. Both times, I found out about the gigs too late. For the KYE tour, there was someone in the Press & Journal selling three tickets for the Glasgow gig, but by the time I phoned them, they only had one left, so I just left it. Those were the days when I still thought you have to have someone with you to go to a gig, so it wasn't until the LB tour that I thought "fuck this, I'm not missing out again just because none of my mates want to go." These days, there is actually no way I would go to a Manics gig with a mate - they would just ruin the experience for me.

Actually, that KYE gig was particularly annoying, because someone I worked with took the two tickets, and when I questioned her about the gig, she clearly had no idea what half the songs were. What a fucking waste...

Also regret not going to more gigs on the tours I did go to (particularly Glasgow and Edinburgh this time round), but that's less of a regret than the times I didn't even go on the tour.

I don't really have any regrets. Maybe if I could say about only really getting into them about "A Design For Life" and not before, but I probably appreciated the first three albums more when I was a little older.

I know it's cliched, but the MSP have provided a sountrack to the last 15 years of my life. Each album is different, and has meant something to me at that time. All I have to do is put on one of the many CD's, tapes or records I have, and I am transported back to different times, places and memories.

That's a good point, I quite regret not seeing James on his second tour. I also kind of regret not making an effort to see Nicky playing solo, although less so since he only did a few minor festivals, and I hate festivals. So maybe my real regret is that he didn't do a wee solo tour.

I think Nicky only did three gigs and one of them was the Stay Beautiful nightclub in London...

They were messy affairs I hear with him noteable pissed out of his mind and barely hitting a note.

Not listening to Truth when I think about it, I had it at 14 but it didn't connect to me at all at that age, if only I'd found EMG in a charity shop and bought it on a whim...

TIMTTMY was my first Manics album, THB was my second. Both had a profound impact on me.

Interesting, at what age and is TIMTTMY still important, it's probably my least favourite you see?

I can't remember exactly when it was, 15 or 16. I nearly died in April 1999 from a viral brain infection (Encephalitis) so on either side of that event my memory is pretty hazy in places. I do remember it was around that time though and I remember how impressed I was by the album. Musically, it was such a wonderful blend of epic anthems and subdued ballads. Lyrically, it reflected confusion and inner turmoil (which as a 15/16 year old boy I could relate to).

When I listen to TIMTTMY now though, I have a very different perception on it. I've talked about this before in other threads and I've yet to find anyone who agrees with me, but I think TIMTTMY is the perfect sister record to THB. Whilst THB looks outwardly at all the problems, complexities and turmoil of the world (throughout 20th century history mainly), TIMTTMY turns that glare inward. In terms of Nicky's lyrics, it's my favourite because I don't think he's ever topped the imagery he conveyed on that record. It still stands proudly at number 5 in my album ranking and despite one or two tracks that I can take or leave, I pretty much love the entire record. The songs hold a very ethereal quality for me that makes it a special kind of album; I found myself relating to a lot of it at the time and as I've gotten older it's made even more sense to me.

I still think the lyrics to "SYMM" are crap though, but the music is beautiful

I completely appreciate that, and may I say how glad I am that you pulled through, although I enjoyed TIMTTMY it simply ended up as part of my gradually growing collection of CDs I 'just liked', I didn't know anything about the band and the songs didn't have much that I emphasised with, although Born A Girl was very touching. THB spoke to me a lot more and both complimented and lead to my cynical self.

Hmm, I still don't quite see it really but I get your point, I'd never listen to the two at the same time though and I don't think Nicky's lyrics are quite so analytical as his and Richey's in THB (though TIMTTMY lyrics are some of his best).

Agreed, but I just find them quite funny.
