Just as I get out of the habit of checking FD, the Manics go and make news again! Well, I hope they get some well-deserved rest, and maybe by the time they're touring again I'll have money to fly across the ocean and see them.

You know if you think about it, the man responsible for this 2 year break is the short arse wanker Phil Collins.

Greatest hits may still come out anyway since JDB didn't mention it specifically...FD is a really dire greatest hits album and such compilations tend to come out either in the height or in the breaks of a band's career, so this might be a good opportunity. And JDB and Nicky might go stir-crazy and do solo albums...plus Nicky's polaroid book still appears to be coming out. PFAYM really wasn't at all my cup of tea, they probably deserve a a break to mull things over and come back at their best anyhow. I'm (surprisingly) not terribly unnerved by this.

True, Nicky seems to be so dissappointed by this charts-thing.

He also said an American tour. I don't think everything Sean says comes true

I'll be very sad if there is no winter tour after i've geared myself up for one. However, it would be quite nice to actually have some money to get a savings account up and running again!!

Want to hear some of the other songs off Postcards live! No holiday until 'All We Make Is Entertainment' and 'Don't Be Evil' AT LEAST get an airing!

First up, what a great interview! Really good to hear James speaking almost off he record to a degree.

I have to say if it is the decision for the band to disappear for a while, it's probably the right one. If (like Lifeblood) where they felt they'd mis stepped, then now is also a good time to stop. They flew right into PFAYM on the back of JFPL and despite general critical acceptance, and probably know that in the long run, the songs of this record won't be bullets in the gun in future. I think in order to get the juices flowing again they need to take a step back rather than thinking of product and following up.

They've had the last shot at mass communication and commercially it's not massively worked out. I hope they go and do what they often do and quietly make something they want to make rather than binding themselves in an almost school project like prerequisite to how it needs to sound.

Why do people hate the last greatest hits? Oh wait, I know why. It's because they left off a, b and c, and they're soooo much better than x, y and z. It's a good album and a great introduction to the Manics.

I'd agree with this, it is after all called a 'greatest hits' so you get what it says.

It's because many of the songs were butchered. If they use edits like those again, the next comp will be just as shit, regardless of what the tracklisting is

I've made the point a depressing number of times now, but ever since trying to jam 20 songs on to that album they've completely destroyed their songwriting and made sure barely anything they write now ever makes it past four minutes or has a satisfying final third. Worst thing to ever happen to them.

+1

The edits of You love Us and Motorcycle Emptiness on that record are appalling.

I don't even like that TBTGOG 0f DTTR that much so just haven't been asred about buying it. Probably never will.

Great interview from James, and a break would be good for everyone (Nicky's knees, James's voice and Sean having to run away from fans after gigs)
...just not for too long eh?
