Aye, SKON being constantly played on the radio at work brought up many an awkward conversation.
Colleague: "What's this dirge? Don't you really like the Manics?" Me: "I like good Manics - I want nothing to do with this"

PFAYM just feels more honest. Everyone including the band has admitted that SATT was written to order to to speak.
That said there are certain songs I like. Send Away the Tigers. Rendition, the music to Autumnsong (the overall message inc. video kills it for me though)

Can this thread be re-named 'Where does PFAYM rank for you? NOW WITH OBLIGATORY HYPERBOLE!' ?

or 'Is PFAYM the best thing in the history or recorded sound or worse than having your face torn off by an angry chimp?'

I still think PFAYM is SATT done right; it's got the commercial rock angle but it's actually got the spirit and desire behind the songs, rather than SATT's autopilot radio rock. Eg something like It's Not War is as generically modern day Manics as you could get but it's still quite enjoyable because it's got the right feel to it, like the band's actually having fun playing and recording it.

The silence in between Freedom Of Speech and We Are All Bourgeois Now do you mean? Well yes, could do without that - it's about a 6 minute gap or something ridiculous!

It's melodic, it's got Nicky's most consitent writing since Truth. What's not to like? I certainly prefer it to the rock of Tigers with its repeating repeating lyrical style. Journal was kind of unfinished business from Bible and far too angry for my taste. For me it gets the bronze just edging past Lifeblood in a photo finish.

but better than being locked in an elevator with a hungry honey badger. that's 90% of KYE ![]() edit: actually, I mainly agree with this: I didn't buy PFAYM, just had a copy of it, but deleted that from iTunes too. I have the bootleg of Postcards From Blackwood, which includes the three PFAYM singles, and I listen to that fairly regularly.

Good return to form.
The super deluxe box was a rip- but they toured OZ so all is forgiven.

I know which albums are my favourites, and I know which ones are my least favourites, but the ones in the middle are the ones I can't really order. There's a big morass in the middle where Send Away the Tigers, Gold Against the Soul and Postcards From a Young Man live, but I couldn't put them in any sort of order. It changes according to which one I last listened to.
That said, I think that despite the rather flat, overproduced singles, PFAYM is a strong album that grows with every hearing. I know a lot of people hate it now, but all that means is that in six or seven years time we'll be calling it their overlooked classic and complaining they don't play enough stuff from it live. |
