Winterlovers is the worst Manics song imo. It's just pure sonic cheese. Autumnsong is let down by embarrassing lyrics, it could have been a decent track.

They're not embarrassing!

SATT I think can be summed up by the following visual football metaphor (yes!): Imagine taking a penalty, mildly scuffing it but watching it roll just about into the corner, past a bemused, helpless six-year-old goalkeeper. They hit an easy target, in a not particularly satisfying way, but it's worth a little Henman fist-pump as it won them the game. Back on the radio, back in the NME's good books but it all felt a little empty as the songs weren't really there. As has been said, it was all too calculated and in Wire's own words, "slightly disposable".
God, that metaphor was shit wasn't it?

I'm really quite fond of SATT. No, it doesn't have the raw emotion or lyrical depth of their other work, but it is a lot of fun and the perfect Manics album for when the Manics' other albums are a bit much for me.

I kind of compare it to Queen's Miracle. It's nice enough to listen to it as a celebration of the band back together again. Both albums also gave each band the confidence and space to go for a darker, more challenging direction. With both bands it was the calm before the storm of Innuendo/JFPL both of which also happened to be the last words of 1/4 of each band.

What actually happened with that? Did the film never end up getting released or something? Can't rememeber!

Oh well, Queen won that round then!
No it came out. Not sure the song got finished in time. (I can only take the first five minutes of the film, sorry. It should have been Eastwood...) |
