I had got into Manics in 2003, so SATT was more immediately exciting than Lifeblood and great to have a new album after the solos. Still remember grinning as the song SATT started. It wasn't long after the tours etc that I went off listening to it as the annoying songs grated. They undermine the flow of the album unfairly detracting from some reasonable songs that sound better in a live context. My tastes have expanded from predictable rock thus I rarely listen to it unless I'm going for an all out Manics phase (usually around concerts). Lifeblood by contrast is a great grower after initial uncertainty.

For what it's worth:

Great:
Send Away The Tigers

Good:
Second Great Depression
Rendition

Okay
I'm Just A Patsy
Imperial Bodybags
Indian Summer

Mildly Irritating:
YLAINE
Underdogs

Embarrassing/ annoying.
Autumnsong
Winterlovers
whut? No way, Winterlovers is great. YLAINE should take it's place in embarrassing/annoying. And Rendition is great. Otherwise, great list

Winterlovers is the worst Manics song imo. It's just pure sonic cheese. Autumnsong is let down by embarrassing lyrics, it could have been a decent track.

SATT I think can be summed up by the following visual football metaphor (yes!): Imagine taking a penalty, mildly scuffing it but watching it roll just about into the corner, past a bemused, helpless six-year-old goalkeeper. They hit an easy target, in a not particularly satisfying way, but it's worth a little Henman fist-pump as it won them the game. Back on the radio, back in the NME's good books but it all felt a little empty as the songs weren't really there. As has been said, it was all too calculated and in Wire's own words, "slightly disposable".

God, that metaphor was shit wasn't it?

I'm really quite fond of SATT. No, it doesn't have the raw emotion or lyrical depth of their other work, but it is a lot of fun and the perfect Manics album for when the Manics' other albums are a bit much for me.

I kind of compare it to Queen's Miracle. It's nice enough to listen to it as a celebration of the band back together again. Both albums also gave each band the confidence and space to go for a darker, more challenging direction. With both bands it was the calm before the storm of Innuendo/JFPL both of which also happened to be the last words of 1/4 of each band.

Welcome to the forum! And now you've got me thinking what Queen album could be closest to THB? Pity film studios wouldn't trust the Manics to make a soundtrack album to a film. "Flash" has always been a favourite and I'd love to hear James get stuck into a huge blockbuster score.

What actually happened with that? Did the film never end up getting released or something? Can't rememeber!

No it came out. Not sure the song got finished in time. (I can only take the first five minutes of the film, sorry. It should have been Eastwood...)
