It's to entertain the crowd, get the unity/togetherness message across and to encourage the youngsters to get involved in sport which is of course a very good thing!  I just have never sat through an entire Olympic opening ceremony. Sydney was probably the one I watched most of I think.

Judo-cycling or boxing-tough choice- maybe all 3-if I had this many channels when I was young life would have been complete x
