if that was the case, geez Nicky was exaggerating all the time about his massive gambling debts and his addiction to slot machines!

Well, he's admitted on several occasions that he had a problem with fruit machines in his youth and I believe it was his parents that took the brunt of bailing him out.

I'm not sure if my views on gambling are cultural (its legal here, but it's regulated by the provincial governments and casinos are owned and operated by First Nation reserves) or if it's a personal opinion (my mum's father liked to play the horses so much so that he routinely stole money from his working wife who needed that money for her kids and the roof over their heads) or if I just find it pathetic and embarrassing that a musician who should be discussing music, is going on about betting and odds with relation to sports. One thing is for sure though, I find it hypocritical that he presumably has an issue with the Olympic ceremonies for what they stand for be it promoting royalty or corporate promotions, yet he has no problem promoting gambling (in addition to a host of other hypocrisies which I've already mentioned).

to me it just read as one of his fairly flippant comments. He may have spent loads of money down the bookies or whatever but if he really was in serious trouble over it i doubt he would've landed that degree he spouts on about all the time however much richey was helping him with his essays. You can say you're addicted to stuff as a turn of phrase. It just means you like it a lot

Well this is Nicky Wire we're talking about! I don't think he's going to have to go to Gambler's Anonymous anytime soon. As Hummingbird said in an earlier post, over here we do have a relaxed view to balanced gambling shall we say? A yearly flutter on The National, a bet on a major sporting event etc. I'd be concerned if he was gamblling on the horses every week though!

Why though?? some people do it as a hobby, as long as you are not gambling beyond your means it should'nt matter. Its better than wasting money on fags or booze as at least you can get returns on it.

Aye, you do get professional gamblers. I couldn't cope with that, the stress would do me in!

some would say they get a return on fags and booze, really. they enjoy the experience of either or both.

i get why some are taking exception to Wire's wish to be Joe Pesci out of Casino as much as i get why people are just the same disregarding it; we are all different people and react to these things in our own way. Wire wouldn't be Wire if he made everyone happy.

after his Michael Stipe / Freddie Mercury statement he was probably for a while quite the poster boy for right wing, anti-gay types. i doubt that was what he intended with that and i doubt he intended to cause offence with any of this. it's just that he has in the past been prone to speaking without thinking ("Postcards is our best album ever"), and Twatter is basically a licence to speak drivel without thinking at all.

Aye, and it could be his way of coming to terms with how wrong he was about the Opening Ceremony. He can't like that remix and not love And I Will Kiss.

Underworld are as hot as they've been since everyone was shouting 'lager, lager, lager' back in the 90s. Maybe the Manics have thrown away their Live Aid moment after all...
