Rewind The Film (Track) Thoughts?

I'm really impressed. It is perhaps a tad too long.

I'm glad they gave almost all the vocals to Richard Hawley, his voice suits the subject matter and tone of the song much better than JDB's would.

yea it's identical. They've added lyrics to an instrumental and probably tweaked it a bit. I'm 100% sure mr Axlerod has given full permission

I get that people are disappointed, I really do. I kind of was to when I found out. Maybe 5% of me was disappointed that it wasn't a completely original composition of their own, the other 95% was just happy to hear them try something slightly different and happy at the end of the day that I really liked what I heard.

It's been in my head all day, and that is very rare of something that I've heard for the first time.

Feeling extremely mixed up about this song - on one hand this is by far the most fascinating and unusual piece of music the band has come up with in years, the lyrics are ace and it sounds extremely lush and beautiful.
On the other hand, the more I listen to it, the more I realise that that I cannot relate to this as a Manics song. If James or Nick sang Hawley's part, fine. If it actually was a duet, also good. But my gutfeeling, my emotional reaction is that this is a Richard Hawley song just like "Girl from Tiger Bay" is a Shirley Bassey song written by the Manics.
I cannot listen to it at the moment because it feels so wrong to me - despite the fact that I can acknowledge how fantastic Hawley's vocals are. That's how much of a drama queen I am.
I think I will get out of this Manics bubble for a few days till I've cooled down, I'm really this pathetic!
Might still get gig tickets, though, but feel no buzz to pre-order the album. I feel no excitement anymore at all. At most I get a 9 track album and a few demos out of this, the way I roll. Release album 2, maybe that's got a band feel to it.

you're entitled to your opinion..perfectly valid but i wouldn't miss out on the gigs. Even if you just go to one show, you may like the live versions more. Plus they're smaller venues than usual

This, it's really beautiful and delicate and as you said just DIFFERENT, which is something they've been crying out for really. And ironically the original bits are the best parts, James' bits are just stunning, can't wait for the songs that he takes the lead in.

This is what I said earlier. If they had left James's two bits out it would have been better and not so long.

My thoughts exactly.

This sort of borrowing of sections of melodies and adding original parts to a song is nothing new. Two mainstream pop examples that immediately spring to my mind are Millennium by Robbie Williams and Hung Up by Madonna. Both 'borrow' well-known melodies by other artists and incorporate them into a new song (obviously those are different styles of music involved, but the principle is the same). I'm sure there are countless more examples as well.

I'm still very much loving the song regardless of my "moaning" about who composed what. I also agree that it'd be incredibly stupid for the manics to tweet the name of the album which the "homage/ripoff/cover/whatever" is on, and not go about legally getting the rights or whatever is needed.
It's different and this is great. I love both vocal's on the track, and I'll also probably tune into some of Hawley's work now as a result, because I've never listened to his stuff before.

However yes, a part of me finds it somewhat disappointing that it is not as original a composition as I once had thought.
All the same, I'm still buzzing for the album and the direction they seem to be heading in.

It doesn't sound very Manics because RH voice makes it sound different. James part of course sounds Manics. As Humm said don't miss the gigs, RH won't be there and you will listen to JDB singing the whole thing.

It was a weird first listen this morning because I had zero expectations for the song or the album. It is unManics like, and that's why I like it. They've been brave enough to do something different but not do it half arsed.

James says he doesn't like singing so much now, but his voice is still very much up there. His part really lifts and balances the song. Edwyn Collins could have easily done the Richard Hawley vocal.

Lets see what the album brings.

I've already mentioned it in this thread, 'Interiors'. Nobody has a problem with that song paying tribute to a well known St Etienne track.

I generally love post-modernism and have nothing against sampling, homages, all that kind of thing. I just think it's important to credit the original work when it's so similar/actively, intentionally using it, and I feel like they've been a bit disingenuous about this track so far.

To clarify I did actually stop just short of actually calling it a cover - but it seems to me most of the music in the song is extremely similar to David Axelrod's A Little Girl Lost (um, by the way… that title… seems familiar in Manics land too!!), and I don't know what I'd say to anyone who can't hear the blatant similarity really (I'd be dubious they would notice me talking anyway(!)).

I still love Rewind The Film (track), and I have to say I'm intrigued by the Axelrod track now, will probably have to check all of that album out. Doesn't have to be a big catastrophe…
