No, I jest, I actually agree insofar as I think it would have been nice for them to have put this release on two records at 45rpm.

But it still sounds pretty great to me, so I don't think I'd go so far as to say it was a 'truly dumb' decision.

THB 30 anyone?

Don't people usually complain about remasters being too loud?

Spreading out vinyl across 2 LPs greatly increases quality as the grooves can be wider. Also allows for louder music.

KYE is the quietest record I've ever heard. It's completely unacceptable to have more than about 25 minutes of music on a single side of a record. The grooves get too narrow and result in more skips and quieter music.

2 LPs means you can charge more too. *oh but the SOUND QUALITY* Balls.

I do agree about KYE tho' 15 tracks is too many for one LP

There's 'loudness' in terms of volume, and there's 'loudness' in terms of 'brickwalled', over-compressed (in audio terms) music.

Apparently 45rpm vinyls can apparently accommodate a wider dynamic range more easily, which doesn't mean it's technically louder, but it seems louder in comparison to the quiter parts, and so you're more likely to turn it all up a bit. All of which is the opposite of the 'loudness war' where (often) remasters (and newer music) are compressed and the quietest parts are not much quieter than the loudest bits, and can sound less natural and stuff.

Yep, I think the best example of a "brickwalled" record is Californication by the Chili Peppers. You have two acoustic songs on there, Road Tripping and Scar Tissue, but due to the brickwalled mix they just don't sound right at all, far too loud and in your face for acoustic songs. Compare this to Led Zeppelin's Bron-Yr-Aur from Physical Graffiti (1975) and the difference is apparent.

I think the THB 20 mix is perfect though. If THB were brickwalled it would be unlistenable!

Incidentally, why is "Sculpture of Man" listed as "album version"? Does anyone know, please? Is the Lipstick Traces copy different from the "Faster" single release?

Theoretically, that's all that's happened to the UK mix, too, though, isn't it? And yet the UK mix has changed (to my ears).

A few of the reviews on Amazon are claiming that the record is slightly wider than standard and brushes the needle arm, slowing it and distorting the sound. Is that an issue anyone's had, or something strange about their turntables?

nothing wrong with mine.. are they playing it on one of those cheap retro turntables? The platters are smaller, more suited to singles

Ouch, that must be infuriating.
