Singing is his career so he either copes with it or gives up smoking at least in the run up to a tour where he has to preserve his voice. Smoking and whatever else hasn't damaged Keith Richards' voice, or Ronnie Wood's or Eddie Veder'.... drugs n shit are always a good thing and add some flavour to proceedings. A slightly hoarse James would sound good. Like Phoebe in Friends.
