Leasowes must have been ahead of its time, most people I know went to a secondary modern, a comprehensive, or a grammar school. I took my 'fifth year' exams in 1980, and the term O levels, although still in common use, was probably no longer officially the right term. I took GCEs mostly. Lower sets took CSEs. For Latin and French, everyone at my school took the 16+ exam, which was the precursor of modern GCSEs, and gave a combined award of a CSE and a GCE, so I have a Grade 1 CSE and a Grade B GCE in each subject.
