Downloading (and iTunes in particular) has made all music more accessible, and means that people who want new music don't just have to choose between the new singles that have been released, or whats played by major radio. When you consider the whole myspace revolution, and how to access whatever bands you like sorted by genre, and discover new music easily, then it's pretty easy to see that if people don't like the track, they won't select it.
Theres less of a huge thing about buying physical singles anymore, because music is everywhere. It's only really big fans of the band that will buy the hardcopy for collections sake. And casual fans just won't bother, they'll just be happy to hum along to it on the radio every so often.
