I still need a few more listens. Some songs stand out and enjoyable and others made me smash my face on my keyboard.

after the single, which signified a boring direction but i can appreciate as basically enjoyable bullshit like Nixon or Revol or whatever, the title track and Some Kind Of Nothingness are pretty stirring, and while it's all overblown i get the sense of a band doing what they set out to do... until after that it all seems to be pretty lightweight rock/pop. Auto-Intoxication is interesting and tasteful enough that it could have been on Journal, there are some nice little touches here and there like the bit of eastern melody for ten seconds in the middle of Hazelton Avenue, the repetition in Golden Platitudes is good but *sigh*... i actually wish there were MORE strings and choirs to give the album more of an identity- it doesn't sound big enough after the opening assault. the record fizzles out. they didn't bring enough depth or soul to the table, Nicky recycles a tune from his amateurish solo album, the closing track does nothing, and i don't think the album works. it's not what they were going for and it's certainly not very artistic.
fan or not, there really is too much great music out there to be wasting time on JDB's patronising chirpy fillers and Nicky's embarrassingly naff and shallowly articulated opinions on popular culture. |

Obviously, there is a natural bias towards MSP here, and there will be people who enjoy it no matter what. But you know what? When a song is shit on first listen, and ends up being 'amazing', the majority of the time it isn't amazing, it's just a familiarity effect. If you really want to like something, or at least really don't want to accept that it's a pile of shit, then it is likely to come true (How do you think smart people believe in God?). I'm not going to grumble at people for doing that, cos I like it when people are happy. However, being fair, aside from a couple of tracks and a few moments, I think this is a bad, bad album.

We are still waiting on this section, it's gonna be badass. But while you wait perhaps you would care to peruse the lyrics for 'Underdogs' and 'Your Love Is Not Enough', from the album 'Send Away The Tigers'. |

Conversely, I loved SATT when I first hear it but after a few months I began to hate it. Now the only songs I genuinely like are The Second Great Depression and Indian Summer. |

i suspect PFAYM won't grow on me but it's only a suspicion. maybe there's genuinely something to it that isn't immediately obvious to me sitting by my computer having a sandwich on this late summer afternoon. |

This record is the record I knew they'd make.
Absolutely dull. Couple of good songs but the songs I've heard aren't any better in the context of the album. It's hard to get an objective opinion on a Manics forum after all, so I'm glad there are people who like it or really love it but for me it's easily next to Lifeblood, This is My Truth, Know Your Enemy and Gold Against the Soul for me - just a bad Manics album. What makes it worse, though, is that they expect their fans to lap this rubbish up. Everyone went crazy for the last record. Of course we don't want a return to that but this is a very calculated attempt at getting mass airplay. It's a step backwards.

Go back to the first page of this thread and read my review. I'm perfectly capable of being objective about one of my favourite bands. Just because you don't enjoy the album does not automatically mean the opposing opinions lack any objectivity.

As for your edit...I didn't say you weren't being objective. I'm just saying that on a Manics forum I'm not really looking for or expecting one. Nor did I say, at any point, that a good review of the record wouldn't be objective. Dunno where you pulled that one from.
