But on a side note, this album is a good diversion from JFPL. I understand why some fans might dislike it, however they can't produce an album like that every year. This is a welcome distraction which, also is a solid album when played in entirely. Even I Think I Love It fits in the album when listened from start to finish.

It could be worse. You could be talking about Nickelback. Arcade Fire is really hot here, except for touring. They're bypassing my burg. Lots of complaints about that. I like their latest song, but that's about it. The modern rock charts are 'meh', the real 'rock' charts are I dunno what they are, the electro-pop and dance stuff I don't get. I'm tired of classic rock when it's the same stuff all the time.

I listen to each Manics albums individually and assess them as such. In terms of JFPL, 'Jackie Collins' was absolutely sublime. 'Bag Lady' almost wore out my iPod. No, I don't expect another JFPL. I doubt that the Manics want to go in to that darkness. At least not right now. PFAYM is good. It's listenable, it's accessible, it's enjoyable. A few tracks are stunning. There are some political comments, which is a lot more than many artists make now. Not a lot of 'filler'. Things really aren't black and white. The album is a snapshot of nostalgia. Journeys undertaken by someone who sees possibility in the world. A hopeful naivete, which the world is lacking. We're cynical and jaded. And dark.

The music biz is cyclable. Everything is 'safe' right now. Not many risks. Record companies are just releasing what'll sell. And it's mainly 'Idol'/'X Factor', and other electro and/or fluffy stuff. No one is going to fund something 'different'. The economy is still recovering, album sales are crappy. Concert tours have failed this year.

But seriously. The people who gripe about TIMT and profess to loving GATS shouldn't be taken seriously. GATS had maybe 3 great songs and a lot of filler. It never sounded like an album but a singles collection with only two good singles. TIMT is a complete album.

So is Postcards in my opinion. Just because Richey wrote some clever lyrics doesn't mean the album (GATS) was sonically good. TIMT is a fine balance in my opinion and this album isn't bad either, if not leaning more to the sonically oriented.

And this album does grow significantly on multiple listens.
I'd rate GATS higher for many reasons. It keeps me awake, which is a good start.

It's personal preference though innit.

Let's start a campaign to have SATT deleted, from the shops and our own minds.

I'm very much liking it. I was scared I wouldn't but it's really, really good. especially loving Hazelton Avenue, All We Make Is Entertainment, It's Not War and Golden Platitudes!
thank you Manics-darlings for making such good shiz!

There are some good songs on the record. "Golden Platitudes", "Postcards From...", "Auto-Intoxication", "Some Kind Of Nothingness", "All We Make Is Entertainment", "The Future Has Been Here..." & "It's Not War..." really do it for me.

I may point out that the "over all feeling" of this album is euphoric and quite positive, which is a bit irritating, at first, (being especially in love and touch with the melancholic and sometimes desperate sounding Manics back catologue...) but I've managed to end up with a more genuine feeling after a few listenings, surprisingly.

There are tons of musical references to other bands and artists, such as Lenny Kravitz, early David Bowie, Pink Floyd, The Beatles (thank god not as much as I'd feared first...), Queen, The Clash and last, but not least, to themselves (EMG and SATT periods blatantly, more related to the TIMT period...)

The production is slightly confusing and unfocused on this record. It ain't really a cleansed record like SATT. Some of the songs sound like a bunch of single patterns matched together randomly. The result is a bit beasty and chaotic, which isn't a bad thing after all.

I wouldn't say that it is their best record, but it is a pleasant listening.

I'm really struggling to hear the "Queen" in any of the songs. Is it meant to be a reference to the harmonised guitar? That to me sounds more Thin Lizzy...

The title song reminds me of Queen, the piano in the verse that is. The guitars on the whole album just sounds like...JDB.

UEF, the Queen 'sound' refers tothe compressed vocals in the outro of the title track.

To me the title track feels somewhat in the vein of Queen's "Somebody To Love".
